Egan: Once ritzy, Sparks Street now a battered butler for the PS
Ottawa Citizen

By Kelly Egan, Ottawa Citizen, November 16, 2014

Sparks Street, for oldtimers, is the city’s boulevard of broken dreams. It was often said, smirkingly, a cannon could be shot down Sparks after 6 and hit nothing. Not true. The cannon actually hit everything, especially in the stretch between Bank and O’Connor.Snakes alive. Half the block on the north is all hoarding and tarps and fences, the back end of 180 Wellington. One day last week, there were so many trucks on the “pedestrian” mall it looked like Dealer Days for F-150s. via Egan: Once ritzy, Sparks Street now a battered butler for the PS | Ottawa Citizen.

Ottawa Citizen

By Pete Anderson, Ottawa Citizen, November 13, 2014

The division of the Central Experimental Farm is an attack on heritage designations and federal science. On Nov. 3, John Baird announced the transfer of 60 acres of the Farm from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to the National Capital Commission who then offered a dollar-a-year lease to The Ottawa Hospital to build a new Civic Hospital campus. The Farm, founded in 1886, is a National Historic Site of Canada and an important federal research station. The announcement is troubling when read alongside deep cuts across federal research institutions, including the cancellation of the long form census, the closure of libraries at via Peter Anderson: Protect the Experimental Farm | Ottawa Citizen.

Elgin Street patios get mixed reviews
Ottawa Citizen

By Matthew Pearson, Ottawa Citizen, November 13, 2014

The pilot project that allowed more Elgin Street bars and restaurants to have patios this summer should be scrapped because it cramped the narrow sidewalk, decreased accessibility and caused headaches for pedestrians, according to emails sent to the city. Reevely: Fewer riders means less provincial money for OC Transpo with video
Ottawa Citizen

By David Reevely, Ottawa Citizen, November 13, 2014

OC Transpo’s declining ridership has taken a bite out of the money the city’s counted on getting from the provincial government for major transit projects for decades to come, including light rail.

That didn’t come up in what was clearly supposed to be a good-news announcement Thursday at OC Transpo’s big garage on Industrial Avenue. Ottawa MPPs Bob Chiarelli, Marie-France Lalonde, John Fraser and Yasir Naqvi stood in front of some double-decker buses with one councillor Shad Qadri, vice-chair of the transit commission; Mayor Jim Watson and commission chair Diane Deans were otherwise engaged and a second-tier manager from OC Transpo. They were quite pleased with themselves.
