Modern Housing: Should tax dollars pay for someone else’s clean energy
Ottawa Citizen

By Matthew Sachs, Ottawa Citizen, October 23, 2014

Canada has many examples of innovative green building projects, but without your financial support, most would never have succeeded. Some examples: In the Drake Landing community in Okotoks, Alta., 52 homes are connected through underground pipes that deliver heating supplied by solar panels. A full 90 per cent of their space heating comes through clean solar energy. The community won a top award at the 2005 International Awards for Liveable Communities — a program endorsed by the United Nations — but, according to Richard Quail, the Okotoks municipal manager, the project would not have come to fruition without government funding. via Modern Housing: Should tax dollars pay for someone else’s clean energy | Ottawa Citizen.

A candidate running in a west-end ward says he has "metered expectations" of winning, but he's more concerned about getting City Hall to consider commuter rail to Kanata. Guy Annable is facing incumbent College Coun. Rick Chiarelli in Monday's municipal election. Annable has been trying to get people interested in the idea of using an existing rail line from Kanata to bring commuters downtown. via Win not as important as west-end rail for candidate | Ottawa & Region | News | O.

Tree Ottawa project aims to celebrate country's 150th birthday by planting

By Jennifer McIntosh, Ottawa Community News, October 23, 2014

Ecology Ottawa has pledged to plant one million trees before Canada's 150th birthday in 2017.

The Tree Ottawa campaign kicked off on Oct. 14 at Champlain Park.

Chris Henderson, champion for the project dubbed Tree Ottawa, said that's one tree per citizen."It's a great gift to Canada," he said, adding that a lot of the city's tree cover has been lost because of the emerald ash borer.

"Our trees are an immeasurable asset to our urban and suburban lives," said Graham Saul, executive director of Ecology Ottawa.

"They enhance the city in so many ways that improve our health, wealth and well being, yet we often take their presence for granted."

Landowners join environmentalists to resist pipeline

By Derek Dunn, Ottawa Community News, October 23, 2014

Environmental groups and First Nations are finding alliances in unlikely places when it comes to a company's plans to ship oil through several Ottawa Valley municipalities. That was the key message from Sabrina Bowman of the Toronto-based Environmental Defence, who recently spoke against TransCanada's proposed Energy East project at the Galilee Centre in Arnprior.

The proposal is to convert a 40-year-old natural gas pipeline to carry unrefined oil from the Alberta Tar Sands to destinations in Quebec and New Brunswick for sale on international market

Ottawa Voters: Somerset voters face tough choice to replace Holmes
Ottawa Citizen

By Matthew Pearson, Ottawa Citizen, October 23, 2014

Voters in Somerset ward are faced with such an embarrassment of riches that it’s hard not to wish a few of the candidates here were running elsewhere so more than one might end up on city council. Diane Holmes has had such a firm grip on the ward, not to mention the array of complex issues it faces, that past challengers were no match. Her share of the vote in the past three elections never dipped below 60 per cent, making her the likely front-runner this year until April, when she announced her retirement, clearing the way for someone new. via Ottawa Voters: Somerset voters face tough choice to replace Holmes | Ottawa Citizen.
