The city’s finance committee will be asked to approve spending $7 million more to develop the second phase of light rail now that an environmental assessment has confirmed the ambitious plan is viable, even though other levels of government have not officially approved funding the project yet. In 1970, Joni Mitchell released her hit song Big Yellow Taxi in which she sang, "they paved paradise to put up a parking lot."

On Saturday, St. Anthony Catholic School (391 Booth Street) will be tearing up a part of their parking lot to put up a little bit of paradise.

The Depave Paradise project will see volunteers from the school, Ecology Ottawa, and local residents, plant a garden where the old section of lot used to be.

There was something a little bigger than a Great Dane spotted at a popular dog park in the city's south end on Saturday evening.

A black bear was seen coming out of the bush at Conroy Pit around 6:30 p.m.

Heather Cotton told CFRA she was walking along a path about 100 metres away from the parking lot when she saw the animal come walking out of the bush.

As Pope Francis pontificates on the dangers of ignoring the environment, a local school is already taking concrete steps to go more ecologically-friendly. St. Anthony Catholic School broke ground Saturday on a new initiative to replace some of the asphalt in its schoolyard with a garden, in a move that principal Paul McGuire said had been in the works for quite some time. When an unlucky deer crashed through a living room window in Kanata earlier this month, there’s a good chance it had been pushed out of its home by housing construction at nearby.
