The Rideau Canal was a working waterway before it was a pretty groomed tourist attraction. On this perfect, early summer day it deserves a dedicated artist, a nouveau impressionist to immortalize it over and above its annual millions of phone-snaps, but 120 years ago these same banks north and south of the Corktown bridge were either wild or industrialized. Railway lines and yards, coal yards and shipyards, all sorts of boats and transport businesses, turning basins and warehouses formed its downtown topography. OC Transpo is celebrating Canada Day with a fare hike.

City Council approved the 2.5 per cent increase in transit fares as part of the 2015 City of Ottawa budget.

Starting July 1st, the cost of a regular adult monthly bus pass increases $2.50 to $103.25, while a student pass jumps $2 to $82.25.

It’s official: Main Street is going green. Although the pastoral Oblate lands along the Rideau River are facing massive change, developer The Regional Group and builder eQ Homes announced Tuesday that the mixed-use community planned for the 26-acre site just south of the Queensway, which has been touted as a green project from the beginning, will be seeking LEED-ND certification. Environment Canada warns of cool, wet weather, strong winds

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for the Ottawa area early Saturday, warning of “unseasonably cool wind-driven rain” over the weekend. A low pressure system arriving from the American Midwest on Saturday will spread rain across southern Ontario from west to east through the day. The rain began over Southwestern Ontario Saturday morning and will work its way eastward, reaching Eastern Ontario Saturday night, according to the agency. Toilets, cycling, arts funding all part of pre-budget town hall

Mayor Jim Watson’s first tele-town hall on the 2016 budget process covered every Ottawa issue you can think of on June 25.

For one hour, residents were invited to call in to the city’s first-ever phone conference, where they could listen to the discussion and sign up to tell Watson what they’d like to see included in next year’s budget.

The mayor, the city manager, the city treasurer and most department managers were on hand for the discussion so that listeners could get the most accurate answers.
