As Pope Francis pontificates on the dangers of ignoring the environment, a local school is already taking concrete steps to go more ecologically-friendly. St. Anthony Catholic School broke ground Saturday on a new initiative to replace some of the asphalt in its schoolyard with a garden, in a move that principal Paul McGuire said had been in the works for quite some time. (...) The work was entirely done on Saturday by a team of volunteers, parents and residents of the neighbourhood, as well as representatives from two companies that gave the school grants: Ecology Ottawa and Evergreen Canada. “If we just wanted to get this done, we could have gotten it done with a contractor in a day,” said Stu Campana, water project manager at Ecology Ottawa. “But what we want to do is allow people to feel a sense of ownership over the project, over their community, over their school.” via St. Anthony Catholic School replaces asphalt with a cool, green garden | Ottawa Citizen.
