A new bike sharing business will launch Tuesday when VeloGo rolls out its
300-bike fleet in central Ottawa and Gatineau. The company held a soft launch
last fall when they demonstrated their “Smart Bike” technology. The bikes are
each equipped with GPS tracking and a lock, allowing customers to reserve the
bike from a smartphone or with a membership card available online or at some
kiosks. They unlock it using a four-digit PIN code and once they’re done, they
can return the bike to a docking station or lock it on any public bicycle rack
using the same PIN. via

A Sandy Hill community group is calling out the city’s planning department for
ignoring a neighbourhood plan that expressly prohibits the kind of development
now being recommended for approval. Action Sandy Hill says an established plan
for the area, as well as the new Uptown Rideau community design plan — which
should be finished this fall — calls for a height limit of six storeys on the
south side of Rideau between Chapel Street and the Rideau River. via

Construction crews are beginning work to widen Scott Street this month.
Hundreds of city buses will run along the street between 2016 and 2018 while the West Transtitway is converted to light rail.
Construction will start Monday on the north side of Scott between Bayview and Smirle Avenue. The work includes relocating traffic signals, expanding and partially reconstructing the existing multi-use pathway, installing curbside catch basins and repaving the roadway.

Sometimes small improvements make a major impact. That's what one business
executive suggested at City Hall this week during yet another discussion on how
to gussy up the Byward Market. The city doesn't have a bag of money to make
massive infrastructure upgrades. Plans kicked around behind the scenes pitch a
new market building, underground parking and a big public square, but it's all
pie-in-the-sky if there's no money to back the projects. via

Five days into the big Transitway detour and bus service is about what OC
Transpo expected. There has only been one cock-up that could have been pretty
serious if a driver didn't quickly realize he was heading into oncoming traffic.

Some of the hundreds of Ottawa parents whose children will be walking to school
instead of taking the bus next year are worried about safety. New walk zones
have been created that deem children in specific areas ineligible to take the
school bus because they are too close to school. Last week, dozens of schools in
Ottawa handed out letters to parents after the Ottawa Student Transportation
Authority developed safer walking routes. via

Despite objections from residents and community associations, the transportation
committee has approved the construction of a level crossing at Holly Acres Road
as part of the planned western extension of the Transitway to Moodie Drive. The
revamped plans for extending the Transitway from Bayshore Shopping Centre to
Moodie were largely driven by a drop in the number of commuters expected to take
the bus to the new Department of National Defence site on Moodie Drive. DND has
nearly halved the number of employees it expects to house at the former Nortel
campus, from 15,000 to about 8,500. via

All Ottawa beaches are off-limits for swimming for Thursday at least. Ottawa
Public Health has put out the advisory because of the heavy rain on Canada Day.
Rain can wash bacteria into the water, and it takes up to 24 hours to do the lab
test showing how high bacterial levels are, so it’s common to issue a
no-swimming advisory after heavy rain rather than waiting for the lab via

From squirming maggots to rotting fruit and vegetables, summer green bins are a
breeding ground for all things nasty. But Andy and Michelle Harmon can make all
the creepy crawlies, horrible smells and caked-on guck go away — and they’ll
even come to your house to do it. via

The recent passing of Bill 31 means cyclists will pedal with more road room,
cruise down special crossings and drivers will face stiffer fines for texting
behind the wheel. The amendment to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act means new
rules are coming down the road for both drivers and cyclists. via

Beacon Hill-Cyrville Coun. Tim Tierney has convinced the transportation
committee to recommend reducing the speed limit on a stretch of Blair Road, even
though officials in the public works department say drivers probably won’t slow
down unless police step up enforcement. Tierney wants the speed limit along
Blair between Meadowbrook Drive and Innes Road to be reduced to 50 km/h from 70
km/h. via
