When city council nixed plans for a private Sandy Hill student residence earlier this year, some politicians floated an idea: Ottawa’s transit system means students don’t need to live close to campus. “We have a very good transit stop, one of the best-used stops in all of Ottawa is at the Campus Station, and it’s going to get even better in a few years when the light-rail station arrives on that site,” Mayor Jim Watson said at the March council meeting. “So it does allow students not necessarily to simply have to choose to live in the Sandy Hill community to go to Ottawa U.” via Town and Gown: Could the LRT disperse student populations? | Ottawa Citizen.

On one of the hottest days of the year and with the humidex close to 40 degrees, many people sought shade or hit the beach to cool down on Friday.Although not a record, the humidex in Ottawa reached 37.6 degrees.Those working in the “Ottawa Streat Gourmet” food truck said today was the hottest day of the year in the truck.

On the median of King Edward Ave., waist-high weeds blooming with nothing but garbage tangle at the foot of towering sculptures of unfurling fiddleheads. They're supposed to represent how nature sprouts indomitable amid asphalt. No kidding. Aiming to reduce deaths and injuries on Ontario’s streets, Ottawa Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi wants the provincial government to reduce Ontario’s default speed limit to 40 km/h from 50. That’s the limit that applies on streets that don’t have signs saying otherwise, including most residential streets off main roads. It’s spelled out in the province’s Highway Traffic Act, which Naqvi wants to amend. Province to test motion-sensing tech in Ottawa homes to save energy

The Ontario Power Authority is funding a $182,000 project to put motion-detecting sensors in 35 homes, including 15 in Ottawa, to test their efficiency in saving homeowners money on their energy bills. The provincial government has plans to re-introduce a bill to reduce speed limits on residential roads.

Ottawa Centre MPP and Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, Yasir Naqvi is asking that the Highway Traffic Act be amended so that the default speed limit on residential roads would be reduced from 50 km/h to 40 km/h unless otherwise posted.
