Skeptics, problem-solvers pack climate change town hall

By Erin McCracken, Ottawa South News, Mar. 19, 2015

When it comes to fighting climate change, the writing is on the wall in Ottawa. “Ontario is falling behind in the production of electric cars compared to Japan, the U.S. and Europe,” said Kanata resident Allan Poulson. He drove his electric car, a converted Ford Ranger, to a town-hall meeting on climate change at the RA Centre on March 11 to share his ideas with the Ontario government, which is developing a 35-year strategy and five-year action plan on climate change and strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. via Skeptics, problem-solvers pack climate change town hall.

New records detail how climate-change views scuttled artist’s grant
Ottawa Citizen

By Ian MacLoed, Ottawa Citizen, Mar. 22, 2015

A British Columbia artist and environmental activist accuses government of misusing its censorship powers to hide a politically driven effort to silence her because of her views on climate change and the oilsands. Franke James found herself on the federal government’s radar in the spring of 2011 after Canadian diplomats agreed to offer a $5,000 grant in support of a European art tour featuring James’s artwork. The grant was revoked a few days later by a senior director of the Foreign Affairs Department’s climate change division, who felt the funding would “run counter to Canada’s interests.” via New records detail how climate-change views scuttled artist’s grant | Ottawa Citizen.

Bureaucrats warned against removing green requirements for infrastructure projects
Ottawa Citizen

By Jordan Press, Ottawa Citizen, Mar. 22, 2015

Senior bureaucrats worried last year that removing green requirements for infrastructure projects that wanted federal funds would “negatively impact Canada’s ability to adapt to climate change,” according to recently released documents. The possibility that environmental requirements would no longer apply to projects looking for grants from the federal gas tax and Building Canada had officials at Public Safety Canada suggesting cabinet be lobbied to not ditch the green criteria and cement that decision in the upcoming federal budget. via Bureaucrats warned against removing green requirements for infrastructure projects | Ottawa Citizen.

Cash for trash: TerraCycle pays for hard-to-recycle plastics from household cleaning products
Ottawa Citizen

By Karen Turner, March 22, 2015

At the risk of being pelted with snowballs or accused of being a fan of our never-ending winter, I must point out that there is a downside to spring and all that warm and wonderful sunshine: It’s the time of year to rid our homes of months of pent-up dust, dirt and grime. Spring cleaning is an annual chore few readily enjoy, but there is a satisfaction that comes from scrubbing floors till they gleam, sucking up cobwebs dangling from previously dark corners and washing windows to allow the outdoors in. via Cash for trash: TerraCycle pays for hard-to-recycle plastics from household cleaning products | Ottawa Citizen.
