Westboro residents are digging in to reject plans for trenched light rail through their neighbourhood in favour of a fully-buried line between Dominion and Cleary stations. The city held a public consultation at city hall on March 30 to discuss new plans for a 1.2-kilometre stretch of track that was subject to a 100-day negotiation period between city staff and the National Capital Commission this winter. via Westboro residents want LRT trench buried.

Ottawa Citizen

By Alicia K. Gosselin, Ottawa Citizen, April 3, 2015

If you’re an artist in the national capital who would love nothing more than to tag your masterpiece to the underside of a city bridge, there’s now a legal way to do it. The City of Ottawa is seeking mural artists to paint the walls of two Queensway underpasses — Carling Avenue and Bank Street — to enhance the streetscape and pinpoint the bridges as key gateways to the city. via City issues call to mural artists to ‘beautify’ key underpasses | Ottawa Citizen.

Recyclers diversify as scrap steel hits all-time low - Ottawa - CBC News

CBC News, April 1, 2015

Some recycling businesses in and around Ottawa are looking to diversify as the price of scrap steel is at an all-time low. Scrap steel was worth up to $270 per metric ton a few years ago but is now sitting at $90, with some recyclers saying they've stopped relying on it for a profit. Foxy Recyle handles e-waste, such as copper, aluminum and gold found in old computers. (Stu Mills/CBC) "We've kept it at 90 because [we] can't drop it any more. It's just outrageous," said Tyler Griesseier, the manager at AIM Metal Recycling. via Recyclers diversify as scrap steel hits all-time low - Ottawa - CBC News.

Hydro help for low-income Ontarians on way

By Steph Willems, Ottawa Community News, April 1, 2015

Low-income households will see their hydro bills reduced under a program introduced by the Ontario government on March 26, while other hydro users will see an increase.

The Ontario Electricity Support Program will be administered by the Ontario Energy Board, and will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2016.

Factoring income levels and the number of people in a household, a sliding scale is used to calculate how much a qualifying household would save, ranging from $20 to $50 a month. The timing of the subsidy coincides with the elimination of the 10 per cent Ontario Clean Energy Benefit at the end of this year.

Chianello: Check out Ottawa’s blue-sky library planning — it’s worth your time
Ottawa Citizen

By Joanne Chianello, Ottawa Citizen, April 1, 2015

If you were at Ottawa City Hall on Monday night, you would have witnessed a somewhat familiar scene at 110 Laurier Ave. — hundreds of folks milling about Jean Pigott Hall, squinting at placards set up around the edges of the atrium for an hour or so, then filing into the council chambers to listen to a formal presentation and ask questions. But if you returned to city hall the following evening — because where else would you want to spend most of your weeknights? — you would have been treated to a very different public meeting. About 23 round tables covered in white cloths were set up in that same space. And while there was a short presentation at the start of the evening, most of the time was spent in facilitated group discussions around the tables. The 160 participants — plus another 570 online — were encouraged to voice their hopes and dreams for a new city project, without thought to budget, location or any other constraint. via Chianello: Check out Ottawa’s blue-sky library planning — it’s worth your time | Ottawa Citizen.
