Wednesday is the astronomical event of the year for people who love meteor showers. The Perseid meteor shower coincides with a new moon this year, meaning an extra bright array of shooting stars. In a reversal of position, the municipality of Nation - east of Ottawa - has declared itself an "unwilling host" to wind turbines.

The decision early this evening at a council meeting comes after a massive appeal from people in the community.

Mayor Francois St-Amour says 80% of residents were against projects proposed for St. Isidore and St. Bernardin.

Re : The problem with bike-helmet laws Like writer Jonathan McLeod, I look forward to seeing more people use their bicycle to get around the city. Unlike him, I would like to see them to wear helmets. Most people will never see the life-saving properties of their helmet put to the test. I did. I got a finger joint destroyed and my collarbone broken, but it’s the helmet that got gouged by gravel, not my skull. There are many good reasons to wear a bicycle helmet. It can keep the sun and sweat out of your eyes in summer; it can keep your head dry when it rains and warm during winter. It can be a lovely fashion accessory when enjoying Ottawa’s street life, but despite what Statistics Canada, the city or any other busybody claims, there is scant evidence safety is a reason. Earlier this year, Statistics Canada released a study claiming that “only” 42 per cent of Canadian adults always wear a helmet while biking, and only 45 per cent of Ottawa adults. Media and NGOs glommed onto this factoid, expressing much despair that bicyclists were tempting fate. Pilot project on Wellington aimed at improving cycling safety

A pilot project is underway in Ottawa’s west end in an effort to make cycling safer and prevent incidents of “dooring.” Dooring is when a driver opens their door without checking for a passing cyclist, who is often hit as they don’t have time to get out of the way. Drivers and cyclists will notice new markings on Wellington Street West between Parkdale and Holland Avenues. Uber blitz in Ottawa after taxi drivers release vigilante-style video - Ottawa - CBC News

Ottawa police and bylaw officers from the City of Ottawa teamed up to lay 32 charges against Uber drivers during a blitz on Thursday after taxi drivers released a vigilante-style video offering evidence against the ride-sharing.
