Jonathan McLeod: The problem with bike helmets

There are many good reasons to wear a bicycle helmet. It can keep the sun and sweat out of your eyes in summer; it can keep your head dry when it rains and warm during winter. It can be a lovely fashion accessory when enjoying Ottawa’s street life, but despite what Statistics Canada, the city or any other busybody claims, there is scant evidence safety is a reason. Earlier this year, Statistics Canada released a study claiming that “only” 42 per cent of Canadian adults always wear a helmet while biking, and only 45 per cent of Ottawa adults. Media and NGOs glommed onto this factoid, expressing much despair that bicyclists were tempting fate. But the best laid nags of mice and men … as they say (or should). via Jonathan McLeod: The problem with bike helmets | Ottawa Citizen.
