Mayor Jim Watson says our city will benefit from a Liberal majority government.

"Because I think it's a strong vote of encouragement and support for the city of Ottawa's two major priorities: cleaning up the Ottawa River and continuing on with our light rail plans," he told reporters Friday morning.

The city needs $65 million from the provincial government for a project that's been billed to keep all sewage out of the Ottawa River. The Liberals have promised that amount and it's in the budget that will now likely pass when the legislature resumes.

Ottawa police say two deer were spotted wandering in the downtown area late Sunday morning.

Police warned pedestrians and vehicles to avoid the area bouded by Rideau Street, the Cummings Bridge, Chapel Street and Range Road where the deer were seen.

Re: OC Transpo ridership on the decline, June 12.This Citizen article presents an interesting rationalization for OC Transpo ridership decline. How about some reality? No one wants to work downtown — they are there because their jobs are there. As businesses realize they also do not need to be there and move to more convenient, pleasant and less costly locations, they do so. I want to encourage everyone to get out and vote, just to show the politicians that we do care and we will try to make a difference. Perhaps one day we will even have a proportional system where everyone’s vote will actually count, as in many other modern democracies.

I will opt for the Green party, because I want them to know there are those of us out here who care very much about issues they raise. Apart from their green agenda, they are the only party with the nerve to say they would eliminate the publicly funded Catholic school boards and use the funds for more appropriate ends.

Ottawa was never going to feel as much love as Toronto during this, or any, provincial election campaign, but it certainly deserves better than the mixed messages on infrastructure from Progressive Conservative leader Tim Hudak.

While Hudak has big plans to break Toronto’s crippling gridlock, his message on Ottawa’s traffic concerns has effectively been: “There, there … we’ll get to you in due time.”Funny how a close election, and as many as four local ridings in play, can change a person’s priorities. Hudak returned to Ottawa on Monday to complete his flip-flop on Phase 2 of Ottawa’s LRT plan, expected to come in at around $3 billion contingent on $1 billion coming from the province. He now supports it, despite delivering an emphatic “no, we can’t afford it” when asked earlier in the campaign if the funding would be there in 2018. There’s one caveat, however: he must balance the budget first. His commitment to Toronto has been much more specific and clear throughout the campaign. And Hudak hasn’t shied away from making long-term plans in other areas of his platform.

Opposition to a stretch of the city’s plan for light rail construction has been hard to miss. Posters and protesters decried the roughly 2,500 buses that were due to take the Scott/Albert detour daily between 2016 and 2018, while the Transitway is inaccessible because of construction work. The city’s executive in charge of LRT says fences and expanded multi-use paths will be part of the redesign of Scott and Albert streets when buses are diverted off the Transitway to make way for rail in 2016.

Deputy city manager Nancy Schepers unrolled a stack of giant maps of the Scott-Albert corridor in a City Hall boardroom Wednesday to show where the city will build pathway connections around Tom Brown Arena, something Somerset Coun. Diane Holmes has been pursuing.

Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath says she "can't say yes" to whether or not her party would be committed to funding phase two of Ottawa's light rail transit construction if her party forms the next government.

During an interview with CFRA host Steve Madely, Madely asked her whether or not her party would commit to funding the next phase of construction for Ottawa's LRT.
