Deadly intersection needs overhaul, Rideau-Vanier candidate says
Metro

By Joe Lofaro, Ottawa Metro News, August 26, 2014

A Rideau-Vanier municipal candidate is proposing to transform a block of Waller Street into a one-way street at Rideau Street to divert some of the trucks and cars from using the busy and sometimes dangerous intersection. Marc Aubin said removing the northbound lane on Waller Street will make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists as interprovincial trucks that usually take that route will be forced to take Nicholas to the Queensway, instead of the tricky left turn onto Waller. via Deadly intersection needs overhaul, Rideau-Vanier candidate says | Metro.

Watson: Many good reasons to oppose provincial energy monopolies
Ottawa Citizen

By William Watson, Ottawa Citizen, August 25, 2014

At their meeting last week, Premiers Philippe Couillard and Kathleen Wynne reportedly reviewed economic studies showing their two provinces would gain if Ontario bought more electricity from Quebec. My guess is this is a file that in their secret hearts they’d really rather not be responsible for — assuming, that is, politicians have hearts and know what a secret is.There are lots of things modern governments need to do. Deciding where people buy their electricity isn’t one of them. Retail sellers of electricity in Ontario have to get their wholesale power from somewhere. Lots of producers are willing to supply it, including Quebec. Whether they do buy from Quebec isn’t really something their premier has to get involved in. How much does Quebec power cost? How reliable is it? Can supply be ramped up quickly? Buyers know their needs. Sellers know what they can supply. Deciding who buys how much, where, and at what price is the kind of thing markets do really well. via Watson: Many good reasons to oppose provincial energy monopolies | Ottawa Citizen.

McLeod: The scourge of sprawl
Ottawa Citizen

By Jonathan McLeod, Ottawa Citizen, August 25, 2014

There’s a culture in our city. It’s replicated across the province, country and continent. It appears with every new subdivision and every new road. Each new development stretching out further away from the city centre poses an added threat to our rural communities. The tensions bred in these communities contribute to the urban-rural class war, and this class war becomes more acute with each municipal election. This class war is insidious. It snakes through our politics. And it is absolutely ridiculous. via McLeod: The scourge of sprawl | Ottawa Citizen.

A garbage-free lunch box

By Ottawa Community News, August 21, 2014

Every day, children eat the contents of their lunch boxes then throw containers, packa ging, and non-recyclable bags into the garbage. Collectively, that means millions of tonnes of garbage are generated unnecessarily - just one child eating prepackaged food in individual portions produces 13.5 kg of garbage per year.

It is definitely time to review how we prepare lunches so we can pack garbage-free lunch boxes. Make it your fi rst lesson of this new school year.Keyword: reusable How to succeed? Simple! Re-use. Start by purchasing large format containers of yo gurt and put an individual portion in a small, reusable container. Do the same thing for juice. Forget about individually wrapped cookies; purchase them in large quantities or bake some at home, and store them in reusable containers.

Bike corral battle brews in Wellington West
CTV Ottawa News

By CTV News Ottawa, August 21, 2014

A bike corral pilot project is causing pain for one Ottawa business. When you can't find a spot you're going to say the hell with it, I'm going to go to the suburbs where there is ample parking,” says Joel Diener, owner of Saslove’s Meat Market. Diener is worried the corral that has been set up on Wellington St. near Grange Ave. could be costing him customers. The corral is one of three taking up parking spots previously designated for cars in Westboro, Hintonburg and the Glebe neighbourhoods. via Bike corral battle brews in Wellington West | CTV Ottawa News.

Ottawa & Region

By Jon Willing, Ottawa Sun, August 21, 2014

Heavyweights of the city's business and tourism sectors say the time has come to seriously consider a rail link to the Ottawa International Airport. Ian Faris, CEO of the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce, said business leaders wouldn't necessarily want an airport link at any cost, but the time seems right to pursue the transit service if an southern extension is in the plans. via Biz, tourism leaders say time has come for airport rail link | Ottawa & Region |.
