It was a quieter big-city mayors’ meeting without Rob Ford – and far less
entertaining. But Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson said the Large Urban Mayors’ Caucus of
Ontario (LUMCO) was more “agreeable” without Toronto’s former (in)famous top
politician. via

The National Capital Commission is looking for ideas to create a linear park
along the Ottawa River. Here’s one: kick the bikes off the bike path. Yes, I
absolutely mean that. More helpfully, why not create a separate bicycle-only
path system along the shoreline that lets pedestrians wander around in peace,
safe from the spandex knights on their daily crusades? via

Patios could be coming to parking spaces in front of select restaurants downtown
this summer. As city council voted to keep patios on Elgin Street, city staff
were already at work, planning a pilot project to build patios on the street in
a couple neighbourhoods rather than sidewalks to free up space for pedestrians,
said Rideau-Vanier Coun. Mathieu Fleury. via

Construction on the north side of Albert Street has forced foot and bike traffic
to use a single crosswalk, delaying buses as they yield to pedestrians. Pylons,
thin rope and orange signs surround what used to be a median in the middle of
Albert Street to separate traffic from the turning lane. via

The musicians who’ve threatened to pull out of Kemptville’s upcoming Dandelion
Festival to protest a sponsorship donation from TransCanada Corp. are putting
personal politics ahead of the community as a whole, says the festival’s
chairman. (...) They do have some support. A local environment group, Ecology
Ottawa, applauds the musicians for their stance.
“It reminds me of the days when musicians came together to launch a cultural boycott of South African Apartheid,” wrote Graham Saul, executive director of Ecology Ottawa, in a news release Sunday. “Musicians are saying they aren’t going to play for oil and pipelines.”

A Kemptville festival says it will return the $5,000 donation it received from
TransCanada Corp. after an outcry from some musicians over the energy company’s
sponsorship prompted a community group to step in and raise the money itself. A
drive spearheaded by the Sustainable North Grenville community group raised the
$5,000 in just over three days, allowing the Dandelion Festival to give back
TransCanada’s contribution. via
