Gower: It's time for a bus-centred rethink of transit to Barrhaven and Stittsville

By Glen Gower, Ottawa Citizen, Op-Ed, April 17, 2023

Per kilometre, the cost to build bus rapid transit is a fraction of the cost of rail. The infrastructure can usually be built in a fraction of the time too.

...Per kilometre, the cost to build BRT is a fraction of the cost of rail. The infrastructure can usually be built in a fraction of the time too. The capacity is less (bus rapid transit moves up to 9,000 people an hour versus 18,000 for light rail) but it could be better matched to the new hybrid-work commuting demand.

How city wastewater could be used in the future LeBreton Flats development

By Ted Raymond, CTV News Ottawa, March 18, 2023

An Ottawa city committee is looking at a proposed plan to use municipal wastewater to help heat and cool apartment buildings at the future LeBreton Flats development without the use of fossil fuels.

A report prepared for the Environment and Climate Change Committee delves into the possibility of using a "wastewater energy transfer" or WET system to extract heat generated by wastewater and convert it to energy to aid in its goal of building a net-zero carbon development.

A similar technology is in use at the Zibi site, using heat generated by the Kruger plant in Gatineau and water from the Ottawa River to provide heating and cooling.

E-scooters could return to Ottawa streets in May, subject to last year's stricter rules

By Taylor Blewett, Ottawa Citizen, March 18, 2023

If last year was the make-or-break season for Ottawa’s shared e-scooter program, then city staff have given companies Bird Canada and Neuron Mobility passing grades.

Next Thursday, the transportation committee will consider whether to green-light a fourth season for the zippy, historically contentious devices. With council and committee’s blessing, scooters could hit the streets as early as May 15 and return in 2024 for a fifth year without needing another council approval.

The city implemented an “aggressive” set of restrictions and requirements on the two e-scooter operators allowed to participate in the program in 2022 following complaints about sidewalk riding and haphazard parking that dogged previous seasons.

More on-street electric vehicle chargers could be coming to Ottawa

By Perter Pzerling, CTV News Ottawa, March 18, 2023

One big barrier for drivers switching from gas to electric cars is public access to charging stations, but Ottawa may soon have more places to plug in.

Throughout the city, there are some electric vehicle charging station at on-street parking spaces – like one on Beechwood Avenue.

But a local councillors says more are needed.

“We need to have many more across the city if we are serious in terms of accommodating the future,” Coun. Rawlson King said.

Nussbaum: What the NCC is doing about climate change (and the Rideau Canal Skateway)

By Tobi Nussbaum, Ottawa Citizen Op-Ed, March 16, 2023

...Every year, our teams look forward to creating this unique experience for locals and visitors. However, this year, it didn’t happen. Despite our best efforts, record warm temperatures, followed by short cold snaps, meant that we never got the thick, stable ice required to safely open the skateway. While we were disappointed with this outcome, we weren’t completely surprised. At the National Capital Commission, we’ve been studying and preparing for — and witnessing firsthand — the effects of climate change on our assets and infrastructure for some time now.

Over the past few years, the National Capital Region has experienced floods, tornadoes and, most recently, a derecho, which left an indelible impact on many of our old-growth forests. Recognizing that climate change is an unavoidable reality we must contend with, the NCC has been assessing and preparing our natural and built assets to meet these challenges.

Residents protest tree cutting near Tewin development in Ottawa's southeast end

By Jackie Perez, CTV News Ottawa, March 12, 2023

Ottawa residents are speaking out against plans to cut down a large swath of trees in the rural southeast end of the city near the Tewin lands.

...On Sunday, a rally was held to call for a stop to the clear-cutting around the Tewin development and demand the city strengthen its tree protection bylaw. It was hosted by Ecology Ottawa, Greenspace Alliance, Community Associations for Environmental Sustainability, Horizon Ottawa and residents living in Carlsbad Springs.

..."The tree protection bylaw came out in 2021, this is its first test," said William van Geest with Ecology Ottawa. “We need the city to step in, tighten the bylaw, clarify and prevent any more destruction on this scale."

City bylaw should prevent 'tree massacres,' advocate says

By Kate Porter, CBC News Ottawa

A longtime advocate for Ottawa's greenspaces says the city's new tree protection bylaw appears to have failed one of its first big tests, now that Tewin partners have been allowed to resume cutting on a swath of land in the rural southeast end.

...Paul Johanis, chair of the Greenspace Alliance of Canada's Capital, has watched city policy-making for years and says the new tree protection bylaw was crafted in part to prevent a repeat of what he called past "tree massacres," including a few areas clear-cut in north Kanata over the past 15 years.

"We have a long history in Ottawa of these types of preemptive clearings of forest cover in that strip of land that's just around the entire urban boundary of the city," said Johanis.
