Council approves $4.6M increase for Airport Parkway bridge

By David Reevely, Ottawa Citizen, December 11, 2013

OTTAWA — The city will spend $4.65 million to finish the cursed Airport Parkway footbridge after its second catastrophic problem halted construction again.

The bridge, which was supposed to be done in November 2011, had to be torn down and started again when the concrete in its signature tower turned out to be faulty, and is now being redesigned after an unorthodox design for the long “stays” that descend from the tower and hold the span in place alarmed the contractor.

By Stephanie Kinsella, CFRA News, December 9, 2013

What\'s being touted as the new and improved version of the Presto fare payment system is already facing skepticism.

The transit commission heard more about Presto 2.2 at its meeting on Monday.

The upgrade is supposed to reduce the time between when you load the card and when you can use it on OC Transpo buses. Currently, it\'s about a 24-48 hour wait, but the upgrade could reduce that to 4 hours. This would help solve one of the long-standing complaints from riders.

By Robert Bostelaar, Ottawa Citizen, December 10, 2013

OTTAWA — The chunky square clamped into a test device at the National Research Council laboratory looks for all the world like a fat ice cream sandwich.

Then the machine, electric motor whirring, begins pulling up on the sandwich’s top layer. The thick square at first resists the effort to tug it apart — clearly, this is no dairy confection — but then, with a snap, surrenders.
