Maple syrup producers are playing a waiting game with Mother Nature but aren't panicking that spring-like weather has yet to arrive. "Because it's so cold, we haven't done a lot of tapping," says local producer Earl Stanley, who's tapped only a dozen trees so far. via Going with the flow, waiting for the sap | Ottawa & Region | News | Ottawa Sun.

Ottawa set to take slow step to waterway clean up
Metro

By Shawn McGibbon, Metro News Ottawa, March 24, 2014

The City of Ottawa is making headway in the preservation and restoration of Ottawa’s rivers and streams, albeit slow headway, says an environmental advocate in anticipation of a new water strategy set to be presented to the city’s Environment Committee on Monday. Phase 1 of the Water Environment Strategy WES will deal with protecting the health of Ottawa’s watersheds.“ In 2010 the city originally promised to finish this by 2012, but they’re late and there can be no excuse,” says Graham Saul, Executive Director of Ecology Ottawa. He adds members of his group are pleased to see the city is finally moving forward, but are disappointed that the completion date is projected for 2015. via Ottawa set to take slow step to waterway clean up | Metro.

Appeal of Arts Court tower plans dismissed

By David Reevely, Ottawa Citizen, March 20, 2014

OTTAWA — Complaints about the new tower that’s supposed to help finance the redevelopment of Arts Court are nothing more than whiny anecdotes that shouldn’t stop the plans, an adjudicator has ruled.

The city’s $34-million plan for the arts complex just southeast of the Rideau Centre includes a tower, probably full of condos, topping out at 23 storeys. The profits are expected to raise about $3 million of the project’s cost, which the city has struggled to cover, and city council rezoned the land to allow it last summer.

By CBC News Ottawa, March 21, 2014

A large sinkhole formed on Waller Street when tunnelling for the new LRT line passed beneath a previously excavated construction pit, according to a technical memo released by the City of Ottawa on Friday. Ottawa Light Rail Transit Constructors wrote in the memo that the mining crew noticed "excessive loose and wet material start to fall" around 9:40 p.m. on February 20. By 1 a.m. on February 21, the sinkhole reached the surface on Waller Street near Laurier Avenue, leaving an eight-metre wide opening in the street. via Downtown sinkhole formed in previously excavated pit - Ottawa - CBC News.

Despite the snow, spring birding has begun

By Bruce Di Labio, Ottawa Citizen, March 21, 2014

Though the battle between winter and spring continues to persist, there is hope. During the early morning of March 17, with temperatures at -21C, I was pleasantly surprised to hear an American Robin in full spring song. It could have been a legitimate spring migrant (out of its mind!) or a local wintering bird begging for spring to arrive.

Although this winter may appear to be harsh and prolonged, these conditions were typical during my early birding years in the late 1960s and early ’70s. During the spring of 1974, the first large movement of water birds didn’t occur until April 4. On that date open water was limited and overcrowded with a deluge of waterfowl and other species fighting for space. But let us not dwell on our winter woes. Unless we are in an ice age, spring will come.

SHAWVILLE — West Quebeckers are trying to raise $15,000 to build a chimney that will never have smoke in it.

Parking poses problems for east-west bikeway; Dangerous conditions on Beechwood not acceptable, cyclists say

By Michelle Nash, Ottawa Community News, March 20, 2014

Area cyclists have expressed concerns about the proposed section of the eastwest bikeway along Beechwood Avenue, saying the existing plan needs more work. Roadwork on St. Patrick Street and changes to Beechwood Avenue are set to begin this summer to implement the east portion of the east-west "bikeway" to connect Vanier to Westboro through downtown.

Leading up to this construction, members of the Vanier Community Association met with project manager Zlatko Krstulic on March 11. The group was able to view the most recent plans, which aim to give cyclists riding east towards St. Laurent Boulevard a safe crossing at the Vanier Parkway. These new details included creating a raised crossing, added time to cross, and better sightlines.

Winter woes hurting animals
Ottawa & Region
News
Ottawa Sun

By Doug Hempstead, Ottawa Sun, March 19, 2014

Let's hope migratory birds who summer in Ottawa decide to stop at a few outlet malls on their way back. Biology and ecology expert Adam Oliver Brown said birds who don't winter in the city, begin returning here based on the hours of daylight, and are at risk of returning too early. via Winter woes hurting animals | Ottawa & Region | News | Ottawa Sun.
