As thousands of people protest soaring hydro rates across the province, several hundred demonstrators gathered to rally outside Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli's Carling Avenue constituency office on Friday afternoon.
They waved signs reading "HEAT OR EAT" in front of honking cars, calling for drastic changes because they can't afford to pay their bills.

Via Rail officials announced late Friday afternoon that there will now be staff posted near the Fallowfield station 24/7 to monitor the rail signals and make any necessary repairs.
The move comes hours after yet another incident of the signals at the Fallowfield crossing malfunctioning. Drivers reported that, after a train passed, the safety arms moved up, but the signals remained flashing, causing major traffic tie-ups.

OTTAWA — TransCanada PipeLines Ltd.’s proposed $12-billion Energy East oil pipeline project will pass through the popular Baxter Conservation Area in the Ottawa’s south end.
Rideau-Goulbourn Coun. Scott Moffatt revealed the new information about the route to the Citizen on Wednesday ahead of a planned public consultation session on Thursday night in North Gower.

The city has begun the process of updating the Uptown Rideau Community Design Plan, despite objections from some residents living in the area.
The update according to Melanie Knight, the city planner in charge, is an attempt to make the street more cohesive.

OTTAWA — Many, if not most, of the several hundred people who attended an “outreach” meeting Thursday evening on TransCanada Pipelines’s Energy East oil pipeline left the session impressed with the company and less concerned about the pipeline’s safety than they had been.
“I wanted to be reassured about the safety (of the pipeline), and I was,” said Frank Smith, a Barrhaven resident once involved in the oil exploration business, summing up his response to the dozen or so information panels on display — covering everything from economic benefits to emergency response systems — and the two dozen TransCanada employees on hand for the four-hour session in the North Gower community centre.

Members of the Albert/Scott Thrown Under the Bus Working Group gathered at the Lebreton Transitway Station Wednesday morning to count buses and the number of transfers.
It's part of a bid to convince the city that there are alternatives to its plan to divert 2,500 buses per day along Scott Street during LRT construction.
