Thunderstorm hits Ottawa, but capital to avoid worst of it

By Carys Mills, Ottawa Citizen, April 14, 2014

OTTAWA — A short but nasty thunderstorm may have paused over the Ottawa-Gatineau area Sunday night, but the heavy rainfall that had earlier been predicted for the region over the next few days appears unlikely.

Early Sunday, Environment Canada maintained a rainfall advisory for much of the region, but particularly for Renfrew, Petawawa, Calabogie and other areas west and north of Ottawa. These communities were warned they could receive between 25 and 50 millimetres of rain from Sunday into Monday — a range that at the time was thought likely for Ottawa, as well.

The dream home Jennifer Rochefort's late father built on the Rideau River near Kars no longer just has a stunning water view. It's a virtual island surrounded on three sides by a moat of sandbags that friends, colleagues and a neighbour teamed up to help her fill and move with the small boat moored on what was once her front lawn. via Rain, rain went away but flood threat still high | Ottawa & Region | News | Ottawa Sun.

Bernard Zeisig's sunny Saturday afternoon paddle took him down flooded Rideau River Dr. and past submerged park benches in Windsor Park to land his kayak on his deck, water lapping his garden fence. His sump pump was working overtime but the water hadn't neared the level of 2008 when he was able to paddle up his driveway on Belmont Ave. in Old Ottawa South. via Heavy rains to come meaning major flood threat | Ottawa & Region | News | Ottawa Sun.

Reevely: Putting the squeeze on Ontario’s Crown corporations won’t fund big transit plans

By David Reevely, Ottawa Citizen, April 11, 2014

OTTAWA — Having given up on expert advice to raise taxes to pay for major transportation projects, the provincial government is punting even its second-best plan at least into 2015.

That’s not the way Finance Minister Charles Sousa described it in a Friday speech. He talked about naming a high-powered task force “dedicated to optimizing assets,” to squeeze Crown corporations for every dollar, selling things the province no longer needs to own and trying to make what remains more efficient.
