OTTAWA — Almost seven months after the fatal crash between an OC Transpo bus and a Via Rail train, the City of Ottawa reported back on several aspects of transit safety Wednesday.
A number of observations from the public and the federal Transportation Safety Board — which continues to probe the crash that killed six — prompted the city to examine aspects of transit in Ottawa. Five updates went to the transit commission:

Re: Speaking for the trees, April 14.
It is amazing that four trees have caused so much discussion. I am thinking of the hundreds of trees that will be clear cut along the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway to make way for the western extension of the light rail project. I don't hear much outrage about these trees.

OTTAWA — Ash trees are being cut by the thousands in this city, hardwood goliaths felled by a half-inch beetle.
City parks now look bare, suddenly too full of sky. Backyards have gone barren. And homeowners are being handed eye-popping estimates for tree removal, followed by near fainting spells.

OTTAWA — The water level of the swelling Rideau River was at its highest level in more than five years on Tuesday, but flooding in Old Ottawa South appeared limited.
However, certain areas remained at risk of flooding and the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority said the Rideau River’s flow below Hog’s Back Falls was expected to increase overnight before declining slowly through Thursday and Friday.

Already 40,000 volunteers have signed up to clean up the capital in neighbourhoods in every corner of the city's boundaries.
The 21st annual Cleaning up the Capital registration runs until May 15 and this year participants are being reminded that diversion is important.

There could be a new warning sign and light installed near the site of last year's fatal bus-train collision by next month.
The city hired CIMA Canada Inc. last fall which is recommending installing the sign and flashing signal 210 metres in advance of the intersection of the level railway crossing with the Transitway (for the northbound approach).
