City should redesign ‘dirty’ green bin
Ottawa Citizen

By Mike Bryan, Ottawa Citizen Letter to the Editor, June 24, 2014

The City of Ottawa’s trendy green bin program was hurriedly imposed on us residents in 2010. But it was poorly thought out and the underlying cost/benefit economics were — and remain — weak at best. Now our neighbourhood raccoons, clever and determined little devils that they are, have done the inevitable: figured out how to knock locked bins over, and have the impact spring the poorly designed top locks open. I am ready to stop using my green bin. It’s bad enough with the stinking mess the garbage collectors leave behind they never completely empty bins and the flies, maggots and other revolting assaults on the senses. via City should redesign ‘dirty’ green bin | Ottawa Citizen.

Western LRT extension: Lincoln Fields to Bayshore
Ottawa Citizen

By Joanne Chianello, Ottawa Citizen, June 21, 2014

You can understand Scott Plunkett’s slight skepticism.

He’s really looking forward to light rail reaching his Queensway Terrace community — eventually — but he wants to keep an eye out for one thing: the planned pedestrian bridge that will connect the future Queensview station to the neighbourhoods on the south side of Highway 417.

Chianello: Hydro Ottawa shouldn’t get to bypass council approval
Ottawa Citizen

By Joanne Chianello, Ottawa Citizen, June 22, 2014

The last time Hydro Ottawa decided unilaterally to “invest” in another line of business in 2009, it ultimately sank almost $1.5 million of public funds into a high-tech street-light company in Victoria, B.C. Although the utility is wholly owned by the city, Hydro Ottawa was able to make this decision without any approval from council, to the vocal dismay of a number of councillors of the day. via Chianello: Hydro Ottawa shouldn’t get to bypass council approval | Ottawa Citizen.
