Carp landfill gets city committee's OK; City at 'mercy of province', residents told

A sense of defeat filled the room as councillors signed off on a zoning amendment needed for expand the Carp landfill during a meeting at city hall on July 3.

Residents who live nearby came to city hall to plead one last time that the planning committee and council can have a say in preventing Waste Management from creating an extension of its landfill onto a new parcel north of the company's existing waste disposal facility.Councillors on the agriculture and rural affairs committee said they didn't have much control over whether the landfill expansion would go ahead or not, since it's in the hands of the Ministry of the Environment to approve the waste facility's operation.

More people are getting around on two wheels, and the local business community has taken note - and taken steps - to encourage a bike-friendly environment. Greenbank realignment study open for feedback

Residents are invited to share their thoughts as the final planning stages for the Greenbank Road realignment project are nearly finished. MMM Group has completed its environmental study for the area on behalf of the city of Ottawa, and the report will be available for comment until Aug. 5. The study area is bordered by Cedarview Drive to the west, Greenbank Road to the east, Cambrian Road to the north and Barnsdale Road to the south. via Greenbank realignment study open for feedback.

Three new cigarette bins are being installed in Vanier in the hopes of keeping the butts out of the waste stream. It's a projected funded by Quartier Vanier, the BIA for the area.

The bins, which can hold 20,000 cigarette butts were designed and made by CigBins, a local entrepreneurial company that got its start through HubOttawa. They will handle all of the services for the bins as well.

If we want to make dangerous intersections like Woodroffe and West Hunt Club safer, it'll take the public's help.

That's the message from Ottawa Police.

Const. Andrew Jasiak with West Division Traffic told CFRA part of the problem at the city's most dangerous intersections is people aren't paying close enough attention, or are driving while distracted.

Workers have torn up the huge asphalt parking lot and started replacing it with around 11,000 square metres of lush, green sod. It’s the great lawn at the centre of the new urban park that is part of Lansdowne’s re-development. The provincial Liberals' re-introduction of its budget Monday gave Mayor Jim Watson the opportunity to emphasize the importance of cleaning the Ottawa River. Four out of the five city beaches were closed Monday because of high bacterial levels.
