Editorial: Let’s get LeBreton Flats right
Ottawa Citizen

By the Editor, Ottawa Citizen, September 15, 2014

It appears the National Capital Commission is finally getting serious about developing its valuable LeBreton Flats land in downtown Ottawa. It’s about time. A city’s core should be vibrant and ambitious, with striking monuments, unique tourist attractions, inviting residential spaces and innovative businesses. None of these descriptions apply to a big boring empty field.Last week, NCC chief executive officer Mark Kristmanson told the Citizen’s Don Butler that the agency wants a new “signature development” that would, he hopes, have national reach. via Editorial: Let’s get LeBreton Flats right | Ottawa Citizen.

Ottawa Citizen

By Samantha Wright-Allen, September 15, 2014

Joseph Boutilier took a 5,000-kilometre, five-month tour of five provinces and three U.S. states — all on his unicycle. The 24-year-old’s tour, dubbed Unity for the Climate, started in his Victoria, B.C., hometown and ended Monday afternoon on Parliament Hill. He spoke with Samantha Wright Allen. Why a unicycle? The climate movement in general is such a serious topic and there’s a lot of doom-and-gloom campaigns, and I wanted to do something that was more lighthearted and accessible and interesting.

Spend $20M on cycling annually, group urges
Ottawa Citizen

By Matthew Pearson, Ottawa Citizen, September 15, 2014

The city should spend $20 million a year on cycling infrastructure, an advocacy group is urging. Citizens for Safe Cycling launched its “I bike, I vote” campaign Monday, six weeks ahead of the Oct. 27 municipal election. The group wants the next instalment of council to tie the amount the city spends annually on cycling infrastructure to the number of people riding bikes on the city’s road network. via Spend $20M on cycling annually, group urges | Ottawa Citizen.

Letter: NDP did not support gas plants relocation
Ottawa Citizen

By Gilles Bisson, Ottawa Citizen Letter to the Editor, September 13, 2014

Re: Citizen apologizes to McGuinty, Sept. 5. In the Sept. 5 edition of the Ottawa Citizen, the newspaper reported that all three provincial parties supported relocation of the gas plants in the 2011 election. New Democrats did not make that commitment. Andrea Horwath made it clear that she believed that it was irresponsible to make this promise without seeing the contract between the Ontario Power Authority and the proponent of the plant. via Letter: NDP did not support gas plants relocation | Ottawa Citizen.

Letter: Presto card: The problems start when you cross over
Ottawa Citizen

By Emily Burton, Ottawa Citizen Letter to the Editor, September 13, 2014

For people living in one province and working in another, I believe the Presto card system is nothing short of Kafkaesque.

Because I live in Ontario and work in Quebec, I risk being asked to pay extra fare to Société de transport de l’outaouais STO on the first ride of the month.

Letter: Transform LeBreton Flats into a quiet refuge
Ottawa Citizen

By Monica Duguid, Ottawa Citizen Letter to the Editor, September 13, 2014

Re: LeBreton Flats: Imagining what Ottawa’s prime real estate could look like, Sept. 12. Is it really true? After all the fuming and hubbub over so many years about what to do with LeBreton Flats, is the National Capital Commission actually considering transforming the ugly duckling into a swan? What a novel idea. The plan as designed by artist Andrew King, although only a possibility, offers a plethora of people pleasing ideas. When Lansdowne Park was under renovation, the question of what to do with the historically sensitive Horticultural building was uppermost. At that time I submitted a suggestion to the Citizen’s Letters to the Editor that it should be considered as a butterfly compound and botanical gardens, which have proven so environmentally friendly and popular in the United States. The Desert Botanical Gardens in suburban Phoenix Arizona as well as the Butterfly House in Niagara Falls were well attended during our visit and the children as well as adults were taken by the beauty of the butterflies and their botanical surroundings. via Letter: Transform LeBreton Flats into a quiet refuge | Ottawa Citizen.
