The city’s planning committee has unanimously approved a proposal to build Ottawa’s tallest building, but it will be years before anyone actually moves into The Sky. That’s the lofty name Richcraft has given the trio of towers it wants to build at 845 Carling Ave., just west of tPreston Street. The tallest, at 55 storeys, will soar over Dow’s Lake and Little Italy, as will a second tower at 45 storeys. On the same day that city officials recommended that Ottawa end its relationship with Plasco Energy Group, the home-grown waste-management firm filed for creditor protection, resulting in the loss of 80 jobs and the end of an era for a company once considered a shining light in the local clean-tech industry. Councillor, community group concerned about ‘public benefits’ at Ritchcraft towers

A community group that is already worried what the construction of Ottawa’s tallest building in Little Italy will do to the neighbourhood says it is “absurd” for the city to consider Ritchcraft spending more than $1 million to bury hydro wires at 845 Carling Ave. a “public benefit.” The owner of the site will ask the city’s planning committee Tuesday to approve the 55-storey condo tower and two smaller towers (45 storeys and 18 storeys tall). If you thought Ottawa has gotten less snow than what you're used to, you're not wrong.

Environment Canada's Geoff Coulson tells CFRA even with some more snow, we're falling a little short of the average.

“The airport’s picked up about 125 centimetres of snow. Downtown’s picked up about 97 centimetres of snow,” he said. “By late into February we’d more expect to see about 170 centimetres at the airport and about 140 centimetres downtown.”

Horse’s injuries inconsistent with animal attack, expert says

The horse injured last week on the Greenbelt near Woodroffe Avenue might not have been attacked by another animal, a wildlife expert says. While city of Ottawa and National Capital Commission officials continue to work towards some sort of compromise acceptable to both parties with regards to the western LRT extension route — we’re supposed to get some sort of news next month after the “100-day truce” proposed by Mayor Jim Watson and MP John Baird — a group of Ottawa residents have signed a petition in favour of the train running under Rochester Field. NFU cautiously backs limiting of chemical neonicotinoids to save bees

The National Farmers Union (NFU) in Ontario has come out in favour of the Ontario government's initiative to restrict the use of neonicotinoid seed treatment.

In a news release, the NFU, which has a chapter in Renfrew County, said it supports promotinh Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to address crop pest problems.
