Pesticide problems continued at Charles H. Hulse Public School on Monday when,
on the day the school reopened, three teachers and one student went home
complaining of headaches, nausea, itchy eyes and sore throats. The symptoms are
similar to those reported by numerous students and staff last month after the
school was sprayed with a pesticide intended for outdoor use. The school
reopened after more than a month of cleaning and renovations to rid it of the
pesticide smell. via

That spiffy outdoor room you’re planning? It may not be the kindest thing you
can do for the planet, according to Carson Arthur of HGTV’s Critical Listing and
other shows. Sacrificing greenery in favour of couches, a firepit and an outdoor
kitchen means you’re eliminating absorbers, even if small ones, of
climate-changing carbon dioxide and maybe having to give up space for an
eco-friendly vegetable garden. via

Taxi drivers are looking to put the brakes on any rule changes that could give
start-up companies like Uber a free ride in Ottawa. The city’s community and
protective services committee gave staff the go-ahead on May 21 to review taxi
and limousine regulations in an effort to catch up to “emerging technologies,”
or the arrival of Uber and other app-based transportation companies that operate
outside the city’s highly-regulated taxi industry. via

the city only to be stopped short when you head to the Ottawa River. There’s
currently no pathway connection between those along the Rideau Canal and those

The blacklegged tick population is creeping northward into Canada, and with it
climbs the risk of contracting Lyme disease. York University researchers are
warning that climate change is causing the country to become increasingly
habitable to the blood-sucking bugs, which migrate by clinging to travelling
birds and deer. via

Thanks to an old-fashioned Ottawa Valley winter and a slow-melt spring,
dandelions are popping up profusely around the city — and some people are
genuinely thrilled about it. “It struck me walking around the city that the
dandelion population seems to be particularly wonderful this year,” said
ecological consultant Dan Brunton. via
