Egan: Propane problems leave rural residents in the cold

By Kelly Egan, Ottawa Citizen, January 9, 2014

In late December, the afternoon her infant grandchildren came over, Joyce Stephens, 56 — just as she had feared — finally ran out of propane for the furnace.

The house, on the banks of the Mississippi River in Carleton Place, started to cool. It would soon be down to 12 degrees.

Icy sidewalks worst since 1998 ice storm, city’s plowing boss says

By David Reevely, Ottawa Citizen, January 9, 2014

OTTAWA — Four rounds of salting and sanding have cleared most of the ice off Ottawa’s busiest sidewalks but many side streets are still practically impassable on foot, the city’s snow-clearing boss admits.

“I don’t think we’ve had this kind of ice since the ice storm of ’98,” Kevin Wylie said Thursday. Repeated attacks by salters and sanders haven’t been able to accomplish very much against the thick layer of ice that built up in Monday’s flash freeze, which followed hours of freezing rain and then melting. The water pooled on the sidewalks, unable to drain into sewer grates that were often still sealed by unmelted snow, then it all froze up.

Another celestial dud: Skywatchers disappointed northern lights no-show

By Blair Crawford, Ottawa Citizen, January 9, 2014

OTTAWA — Promises of a spectacular display of the northern lights over Ottawa were dashed Thursday night when the solar storm predicted by scientists ended up being much weaker than anticipated.

The good news for Ottawa stargazers: a complete cloud cover rolled in by about 9 p.m. that would have made any sky show invisible anyway.

Prescott-Russell politicians fume as Hwy. 174 widening falls off Ottawa’s to-do list

By David Reevely, Ottawa Citizen, January 9, 2014

OTTAWA — Ottawa’s indifference to widening Hwy. 174 is frustrating the mayors whose municipalities east of the city depend on easy passage in and out of the city.

“We feel as if we’re being left out,” said Jean Paul St. Pierre, the mayor of Russell township and warden of the United Counties of Prescott and Russell. “I guess we wonder what’s happening in the west of the city, when you see a four-lane highway going west of the city to Carleton Place, north of the city, when you see a four-lane highway to Arnprior, and we’re making do with a two-lane rural road that’s not even in great shape.”

Pothole season already upon us
CTV Ottawa News

By Joanne Schnurr, CTV News Ottawa, January 8, 2014

It\'s a winter recipe we drivers all hate. Take some asphalt; add a little ice, some rain and some more ice and you\'ve got potholes. They are popping up all over Ottawa and the region, faster than pimples on a teenager. Prince of Wales Drive in the south end of Ottawa looks a little like a slice of Swiss cheese these days. Further up the road at Hunt Club and Greenback, motorist Gord Smith tweeted about a pothole saying, “It looks like it\'s about to swallow up the earth. That\'s not a pothole,” says Smith, “that\'s a fissure.”

Call it what you want; what it is, is costly.
