Re: Hard winter 'positive' for the Great Lakes, Feb. 15

Tom Spears reported on the fact that it seems water levels will rise this year due to a cold, wet winter. However, this uptick in water levels should not be cause for celebration.

The Great Lakes are experiencing a prolonged decline in water levels. This is a serious issue with likely major economic harms to tourism, shipping and property values, in addition to severe environmental degradation, habitat destruction and the loss of pristine nature from the North Channel to Lake St Clair.

Assumption School students plan Earth Day art show; Students want to encourage community members to participate

Do you love finding new ways to reuse or recycle? Are you looking for a neat new art piece for your living room? If that's the case, a group of Grade 6 students at Assumption Catholic School are working on hosting just the art show for you. Cochrane's Dairy and its current owner, Barry Cochrane, are facing five charges under the Fisheries Act for allegedly dumping waste water from the dairy plant into the Castor River in Russell, Ont., southeast of Ottawa. Plan afoot to breathe new nightlife into ByWard Market

OTTAWA — There’s a plan in the works to launch a weekly “night market” in the ByWard Market this summer in a bid to attract an evening shopping crowd and liven up one of Ottawa’s most-visited areas.

Rideau-Vanier Coun. Mathieu Fleury pitched the idea at a committee meeting on Thursday. It’s a pilot project he hopes would attract a larger crowd to the market, a popular tourist attraction with a long history as a destination for local produce.

It was once an unwelcoming area, but now Jules Morin Park in Lowertown is once again a gathering point for the community.

The city officially opened the new fieldhouse at the park off of Clarence Street Monday afternoon.

There are more than 600 kids in a two block radius of the park and Rideau-Vanier councillor Mathieu Fleury told CFRA this is a great gathering space for them and the community.

Metrolinx squares up $10 million it owed Ottawa for Presto Card delays

OTTAWA — The City of Ottawa received more than $10 million in settlement money last year from Metrolinx for delays associated with implementing the Presto Card.

The city’s transit commission was told Wednesday morning that final full settlement funds were received from Metrolinx, the provincial agency which provides the Presto cards for OC Transpo, in December.

Plan to replace Clarence Street heritage building draws fire from community

OTTAWA — A proposal by the National Capital Commission to demolish a heritage building on Clarence Street and build a new one in its place is already raising the ire of nearby residents and community leaders.

Those voicing opposition to demolishing the two-storey stone building at 7 Clarence St. — formerly the site of Memories Restaurant — say the modern-looking building that could replace it doesn’t fit with the rest of the neighbourhood.
