Sutcliffe: Does a city with harsh winters need more bike lanes?
Ottawa Citizen

By Mark Sutcliffe, Ottawa Citizen, May 22, 2014

There’s no doubt the fact that the Laurier Avenue bike lanes have been used a million times over the last three years will become an argument for more city investment in cycling infrastructure. After all, a million is a lot, right? So therefore, the pilot project must be a success. Indeed, although historical data was collected using a different method from the electronic counters along Laurier, it appears the segregated lanes have inspired more people to bike downtown. Clearly, some cyclists have simply moved over to Laurier instead of using other streets. But according to the city there has also been an overall increase in downtown cycling since the lanes were built. via Sutcliffe: Does a city with harsh winters need more bike lanes? | Ottawa Citizen.

Hop on a bike today, help reduce congestion
Ottawa Citizen

By Nancy Biggs, Ottawa Citizen Letter to the Editor, May 23, 2014

Re: Does a city with harsh winters need more bike lanes?, May 23.

The City of Ottawa needs to decide what its objective is with transportation infrastructure and how it will become more sustainable. Active transport and transit-oriented cities are far more livable, with less smog, reduced traffic congestion and shorter commuting times. With more commuting options we get more exercise and are happier and healthier.

Re: Ottawa won’t pay for bike safety, May 20. In his opinion piece on cycling safety measures, Jonathan McLeod notes that the City of Ottawa has reneged on its pledge to keep an additional 16 kilometres of bike paths free of snow all winter due to the estimated $200,000 annual cost. That comes to $12,500 per kilometre. via Time to plow city bike paths in winter | Ottawa Citizen.

Cycling isn’t part of cultural fabric in the capital region
Ottawa Citizen

By Ielan Arnon, Ottawa Citizen Letter to the Editor, May 23, 2014

Re: Ottawa won’t pay for bike safety, May 20.

When I was a teenager, as an avid cyclist who spent much time riding along the Rideau Canal I had a crazy dream: The city should build elevated cycling “express lanes” over the canal bikeway to allow riders to move quickly to their destination, while the lower “collector lanes” would provide access to entry and exit points along the way.
