Public, business representatives wary of paid parking at Westboro meeting

By Steph Willems, Ottawa Community News, May 8, 2015

Residents who attended a public consultation on May 2 weren’t sold on the idea that paid parking will free up scarce on-street spots in the Westboro area. The meeting, organized by Kitchissippi Coun. Jeff Leiper, served to illustrate the results of a 2014 study on the parking situation along the Richmond Road retail strip in Westboro, as well as provide a forum on possible solutions to lack of available parking spaces. via Public, business representatives wary of paid parking at Westboro meeting.

Chianello: Mayor’s ‘strategic initiatives’ short on vision — and consultation
Ottawa Citizen

By Joanne Chianello, Ottawa Citizen, May 8, 2015

Once upon a time, when city mayors weren’t afraid to let elected representatives talk freely in public, councillors would convene to set the priorities for the coming term of council. Imagine that.

They would meet at Pine View Golf Course (when the city still owned the golf course), or Lansdowne Park, for a couple of days of wide-ranging discussions. Councillors would throw around ideas for their own wards or the city at large. They’d discuss where they’d like to take the city and how to get there. City staff would deliver a dose of reality by explaining how much these ideas might cost.

Rural Ottawa Clean Water Grants available - May, 2015 - agrinewsinteractive.com

By Candice Vetter, Eastern Ontario Agrinews, May 8, 2015

CARLSBAD SPRINGS -- Two representatives from the City of Ottawa water committee have visited several locations in rural Ottawa to seek input from area farmers and provide information about rural clean water grants and programs. The City is winding up a five-year program and has to report back to Council on the value of the program, and on input received regarding potential future programs.

Julia Robinson of the Environmental Services Department with the City of Ottawa and Carleton University co-op student Gennese Walker-Scace attended at the Carlsbad Spring Community Centre on Thurs., April 23. They presented a chart of several project types and applicable funding. Participants pointed out which ones seemed adequate or not, such as the grant for fragile land retirement, which offers $150/acre/year with a maximum of 10 acres for buffers and tree plantings. This does not compensate for crop loss which would be closer to $250/acre/year, and the grant should possibly be applicable to more than 10 acres.
