OC Transpo’s annual performance report for 2014 was released Wednesday. The
report will be presented to the city’s transit committee on May 20. After
Montreal and Toronto, Ottawa has the highest transit use per capita in the
country. Ridership across the system only went down slightly, according to the
report. via

Ottawa city staff are asking councillors to approve a review of how the city
charges for water, saying the current system is unsustainable. Water rates have
been increasing at an average rate of six and a half per cent per year to help
pay for upgrades to the city's aging water and sewage system. via

It’s easy to see why councillors don’t want to vote against a church. And they
didn’t. At the planning committee meeting earlier this week, councillors
somewhat reluctantly approved Notre Dame Cathedral’s fourth application for a
temporary parking lot that was first established in 1992. It takes a significant
leap of faith to consider 23 years as temporary. via

Re: Editorial cartoon, May 9. Patrick LaMontagne’s insightful cartoon
demonstrates a reality that has sadly become the norm for many families planning
summer adventures. “Unplugging” has become increasingly difficult for adults and
children alike as we are progressively more dependent on the Internet,
smartphones and the need to feel “connected” at all times. via

All three underground LRT stations downtown will be fully integrated into
buildings, bringing greater connectivity to riders, Mayor Jim Watson told an
Ottawa Chamber of Commerce audience at a Tuesday breakfast meeting. Watson, who
was giving an LRT update ahead of an address by Defence Minister Jason Kenney at
City Hall, announced the city has confirmed agreements with property owners to
integrate the stations at Lyon, Parliament and Rideau. They are the only three
stations located along the tunnel, the excavation of which is two-thirds
complete. via

The Ontario Municipal Board has rejected a controversial 12-storey condo
development proposed for Wellington Street and Island Park Drive, but it may get
a second chance. The board ruled Monday that the building doesn’t qualify for an
exception to the maximum height of nine storeys. The two solutions offered are
to reduce the condo to nine floors or submit a revised plan for a real
“landmark” building. via

Organizers announced Monday that the all-Canadian music festival will be
entirely solar powered. “In the past there hasn’t really been the technology to
run stages for an extended period of time,” said Julie Ribi, the festival’s

Lansdowne Park is becoming exactly what the local councillor wanted to avoid
when the city was designing the urban park and shopping district. "I think it's
terrible," Capital Coun. David Chernushenko told the Sun Monday. "There's far
more vehicle traffic on the whole site than what was envisioned." via

Like most vegetarians, I don’t eat anything that has a face. And my reasons are
the usual three: ethics, environment, and health. But please, don’t call me a
vegetarian. I don’t label myself as such because there are times I bend the
rules and order up poutine made with meat gravy, and the look and smell of a
delightful cut of beef still makes me salivate. I also live with an avid hunter.
And I’m okay with it. The problem is: many of my counterparts are not. via
