O’Connor segregated bike lanes approved by committee

Downtown Ottawa could soon see its second segregated bike lane. The city’s transportation committee on Wednesday unanimously approved a plan to build a 2.5-kilometre, north-south cycling spine on O’Connor Street between Wellington Street and Fifth Avenue. The $4-million plan, if approved by council next week, would be built in two stages. The first section, from Laurier Avenue to Fifth Avenue, will begin next year in conjunction with the scheduled resurfacing of O’Connor. via O’Connor segregated bike lanes approved by committee | Ottawa Citizen.

TORONTO – Ontario has passed new legislation to increase penalties for drivers who text or use a handheld phone, impose a one-metre distance rule between vehicles and bicycles, and hike fines for “dooring” a cyclist. Community associations ‘disappointed’ by infill bylaw

A parade of residents, community association members and developers packed the planning committee meeting on May 26 to take issue with a proposed “infill two” bylaw. The bylaw, which heads to council for consideration on June 24, is Phase 2 of the city’s review of low-rise infill development rules. Around 35 volunteers helped plant flowers, trees and shrubs in Ottawa Community Housing's Fairlea Court Monday morning.

The volunteers, who were with global networking company Genband spruced up Gable Private, Gateville Private and Gore Private, near Heatherington.

"It's all about community engagement," said OCH CEO Stephane Giguere. "As soon as you start beautifying the communities, you engage the tenants, you make people participate, they take ownership in their communities and that's what we've seen if you look at communities that they've been successful in over the years, like Banff-Ledbury. We're looking at Foster Farm and other communities. The big difference was really in engaging the tenants and part of the engagement is relating to that type of initiative."

Parks Canada spending $40M to shore up crumbling Rideau Canal

Moving to address years of neglect, the federal government will spend nearly $40 million over the next five years to repair and replace crumbling infrastructure along the 183-year-old Rideau Canal.
