As an election looms, will climate policy be an issue in Ontario?

Interview with Fatima syed, the Narwhal, City News

Recently the Progressive Conservative government released a climate plan. Actually, they specifically said not to call it a "plan". It's a set of emissions targets and how they plan to hit them. It's not very long and thin on details, and the government's budget didn't add much to it. But does any party in Ontario have a serious climate plan? And with a pandemic, a housing crisis and an inflation spike blowing through household budgets, it's worth asking how big an issue the climate will be in the upcoming election campaign.

Planning committee backs Westboro development at Roosevelt Ave., supports changing rules set by land tribunal

By Jon Willing, Ottawa Citizen, April 28, 2022

A 9-1 vote by the planning committee on Thursday means Ottawa city council will be advised to allow a 12-storey apartment complex along a rapid transit line in Westboro.

...Leiper was skeptical that the development would do enough to accommodate cyclists and urge tenants to use public transit.

On the other hand, Coun. Riley Brockington wondered if the proposed development had enough density and height since it was so close to a transit station. People might ask one day why the buildings aren’t bigger, Brockington said.

Council is scheduled to consider the planning committee’s recommendation on May 11.

Exner-Pirot: The nuclear renaissance is an opportunity for Canada. Will we seize it?

By Heather Exner-Pirot, Ottawa Citizen Op-Ed, April 26, 2022

As the world grapples with the need for low-carbon energy sources, nuclear power is making a comeback. The Chernobyl disaster in 1984 and the Fukushima Daiichi accident in 2011 dealt near-fatal blows to the sector. But our concurrent energy, security and climate crises are changing hearts and minds, and a nuclear renaissance is on the horizon. Canada has all the tools to be a leader in this new era. Will it use them?

City environment committee endorses plan to expand green bin program in apartments and condos

By John Willing, Ottawa Citizen, April 20, 2022

On Tuesday, the standing committee on environmental protection, water and waste management approved a staff policy proposal to require organic-waste collection from multi-residential buildings receiving city garbage services, with an implementation date still being worked out.

Coun. Scott Moffatt, chair of the committee, said an organics strategy for multi-residential buildings should have accompanied the launch of the green bin program years ago, especially as a measure to satisfy the “put-or-pay” requirements for buildings under its processing contract with Convertus (formally Orgaworld).

OC Transpo scales back planned purchase of e-buses

By Chris Kurys, Ottawa City News

OC Transpo is going to buy fewer e-buses than originally planned, as the transit agency listens to advice from the city's auditor general.

Earlier this year, AG Nathalie Gougeon felt the city was taking on 'too large a risk' when it planned on procuring 74 e-buses before gathering sufficient performance testing data across all four seasons.

In response, OC Transpo general manager Renée Amilcar told the transit commission on Wednesday that the agency now planned on purchasing only 26 new e-buses.

Councillors predict Ottawa transit fares will be a fall election issue

By Kate Porter and Matthew Kupfer, CBC News Ottawa

The first overt references to the upcoming municipal election were heard around the Ottawa city council table Wednesday, as councillors predicted that how residents pay for OC Transpo — whether at the fare box or on their property tax bill — will become a campaign issue.

Some councillors have often argued the city should freeze fares, reduce them, or eliminate them on certain days to get more residents using environmentally friendly mass transportation and reduce traffic.

Ottawa city council grapples over new 'high-performance' standards for new home builds, adding to their cost

By Jon Willing, Ottawa Citizen, April 13, 2022

The new standards, which the city can require under its Ontario Planning Act powers through site plans and plans of subdivisions, are meant to make developments more sustainable and environmentally sensitive.

Ottawa city council approved new development standards on Wednesday after a debate that had some members voicing concerns about the municipal government worsening the sticker shock of buying a new home in Ottawa.

Green bin strategy for apartments has early adopters, while others worry about new rules

By Jon Willing, Ottawa Citizen, April 12, 2022

Later this month, council will be asked to approve a plan to get all multi-residential buildings on the green bin program if they receive municipal collection, with the standing committee on environmental protection, water and waste management scheduled to debate the idea on April 19.

There are 2,150 multi-residential buildings receiving municipal waste pickup, and as of last Dec. 1, 929 were participating in the green bin program.
