Restoring public access to Ottawa’s ‘second Niagara’
Ottawa Citizen

By Don Butler, Ottawa Citizen, April 29, 2015

It was once known as “the second Niagara” and was a major tourist attraction in lumber-town Ottawa. But it has been more than a century since anyone thought of Chaudière Falls that way. The falls, whose impassable bubbling cauldron effectively dictated the site of the settlements that grew to become Canada’s capital, have been largely invisible for decades because of the pulp mills and power plants that blocked off access to Chaudière Island. via Restoring public access to Ottawa’s ‘second Niagara’ | Ottawa Citizen.

City-wide burn ban in effect

By Jessica Cunha, Ottawa Community News, April 28, 2015

Ottawa Fire Services reminded residents of this ban after responding to a “fairly large fire” near Richmond on Saturday, April 25. About one-acre of brush was ablaze just behind 6038 Ottawa St. It took firefighters just under 15 minutes to gain control.

The ban remains in effect until conditions improve and green grass can be seen through the dry brush, said fire services. During this time, all open air fires are prohibited, including those on properties that have a burn permit.

Chianello: Why do we think cars would save Sparks?
Ottawa Citizen

By Joanne Chianello, Ottawa Citizen, April 27, 2015

To mark the centennial celebrations of this country, we banned vehicles from Sparks Street, turning it into this city’s premier pedestrian mall. Now, as we approach our sesquicentennial in 2017, some are musing that we should let the cars back on it. The idea of nixing the pedestrian mall was most recently floated by a National Capital Commission advisory committee. As reported by the Citizen’s Don Butler, the committee’s thoughts on returning vehicles to the street were part of the feedback for a long-term development plan that Public Works and Government Services Canada is developing for the north side of Sparks, between Elgin and Bank streets. via Chianello: Why do we think cars would save Sparks? | Ottawa Citizen.

Would allowing vehicles onto Sparks bring Ottawa’s famous street back from the dead?
Ottawa Citizen

By Don Butler, Ottawa Citizen, April 24, 2015

In the beginning, it was good. The Sparks Street Mall, Canada’s first pedestrian-only street, was chock-a-block with department stores and other retail shops. For a time, it bustled. The decline began with the rise of suburban malls and gained momentum with the construction of the Rideau Centre. One by one, Sparks Street’s department stores closed. Properties were left empty, sometimes for years. Scaffolding went up and stayed up. The massive government buildings on the street’s north side were perpetually being renovated, or so it seemed. via Would allowing vehicles onto Sparks bring Ottawa’s famous street back from the dead? | Ottawa Citizen.
