People are dying on our roads. A few years ago, the city introduced the concept
of Complete Streets, a concept that, once implemented, should reduce needless
deaths. But people keep dying, including two in the last three weeks. It is time
for the city’s actions to match its rhetoric. It is time to make Complete
Streets the default method for designing our roads. Complete Streets is a
simple, elegant concept. Streets should be designed to balance the needs of all
users, with an emphasis placed on the most vulnerable users. This means that we
concern ourselves with pedestrian safety first, bicyclists second, followed by
transit and cars.

‘Neonic’ pesticides help farmers battle bugs, but are toxic to
already-beleaguered bees. Ontario tried to fix the problem, Tom Spears explains,
but now both parties are feeling stung. You can wrap up all the troubles
surrounding bees in the stories of two families, both nervous, watching from
opposite sides as the issue spins out of their control. via

Environment Canada has rebranded its Facebook page by completely removing the
department’s name, leaving some users confused and annoyed. The page now has
more a unwieldy title: “Conserve, Restore, and Connect with Nature.” The change
this week means there’s scant evidence of the Environment Canada name on the
page. via

Residents who live near the Tanger Outlets mall and the Canadian Tire Centre in
Ottawa are calling for better pedestrian access across Highway 417. The Huntmar
Drive overpass connects the two Kanata landmarks but it was designed and built
before thousands of people moved into homes nearby. The narrow thoroughfare
lacks sidewalks and is dangerous to bike across, said Joe Boughner of the
Fairwinds Community Association. via
