"I think any reasonable analysis of the parties and their platforms would conclude any of the opposition parties are far more serious about taking on issues of the environment than this government is," said Graham Saul, president of Ecology Ottawa.

Ottawa Farmers' Market vice-president quits

The vice-president of the Ottawa Farmers’ Market has stepped down as frustration grows among vendors who say they are upset by a year of low sales and problems with the market’s new location.

Dan O’Brien, who sells beef from his farm at the market, resigned this weekend at a meeting between fed-up vendors and the market’s board of directors, according to two vendors who were in attendance.

Dean Beckstead looks after about 30,000 trees at Smyth's Apple Orchard south of Ottawa and says a few hours of temperatures as low as -7 C one night in May could cost him as much as 20 per cent of his usual crop.

With contract talks with the city pending, the Ottawa Farmers’ Market is divided by petitions from members wanting the president’s resignation, demands for sanctions against rule-bending vendors and irritation with the way their de facto landlord, Ottawa Sports Entertainment Group, treats the group.

“The farmers’ market is in crisis,” said one member, Ida Vaillancourt, in summarizing the situation.

At the Barrhaven Loblaws in south Ottawa they were doing one to promote the other.Leamington, Ontario-based NatureFresh Farms parked a fully-functioning mobile greenhouse right outside the doors. The display is designed to show passersby how greenhouse-grown produce can be fresher, tastier, and more environmentally-friendly, particularly in Canada’s short growing season. “Consumers want to know where their product is coming from,” says Ray Wowryk, Director of Business Development with NatureFresh.

OC Transpo is projected to be over budget by $11.5 million at the end of 2015.

That's in addition to the $41-million deficit forecast by the city.

In a report published Friday, Transpo says it was over budget by $7.7 million in the first six months of the year and it's taking significant steps to curb spending for the rest of 2015.

Last week farmer’s market vendors staged a silent protest after being asked to shut down early by the city. Pork of Yore owner Ida Vaillancourt said that’s just one of the many issues she’s had with Lansdowne Park.

On Sunday, Vaillancourt packed up her stall early as she was asked, but she’s frustrated by a year of low sales and problems with the market’s new location.

“Lansdowne Park is not a good fit for this market, plain and simple,” said Vaillancourt
