Federal election neighbourhood profile: The Glebe

It’s not hard to paint a picture of your typical resident of the Glebe, one of the city’s oldest and most treasured neighbourhoods.Glebeites, as they’re called, are mostly affluent: more than half of its residents are in the top fifth of Canadian income earners, and three-quarters are in the top half.

They are educated: 90 per cent have at least some post-secondary education. And they are politically engaged: voter turnout is above average for elections at all levels of government.

City staff have been looking at ways to reduce the number of Canada geese taking over four parks along the Rideau River, but they'll need to get crafty if they want to manage the geese there without blowing the budget.

A report from city staff finds the Department of Public Works doesn't have the extra money in their budget to continue the geese management pilot project at Petrie Island while preventing Riverain, Bordeleau, Kingsview and King Edward Parks from going to the birds.

Developer proposes ‘landmark’ condo building for West Wellington

A Toronto developer is proposing what it calls a “landmark” condo building for the corner of Wellington Street West and Island Park Drive, months after the city shot down the company’s first project.

Mizrahi Developments wanted to build a 12-storey building at 1445 and 1451 Wellington St. West, but council turned down the project because the proposed height exceeded what the rules allow for that location.

Driverless shuttle buses being considered for Zibi

Driverless vehicles — the first to operate on public roads in Canada — could be picking up passengers in Ottawa and Gatineau as early as next year.

Windmill Development Group and Kanata’s Canadian Automated Vehicles Centre of Excellence (CAVCOE) are jointly studying the feasibility of using driverless shuttle buses to take passengers from transit stations in Ottawa and Gatineau to Zibi, a community being built on the former Domtar lands in and along the Ottawa River.

Transit top of mind for Liberal hopeful David McGuinty

Ottawa South Liberal candidate David McGuinty was out bright and early at Greenboro station this week, greeting commuters and discussing local issues.

Given the location, it wasn’t surprising that much of the talk centred on transportation. For McGuinty, who is vying for re-election as the riding’s member of Parliament, it was a familiar topic. His most recent position within the Liberal caucus was as the party’s transport critic.

City wants to fix falling rocks on McCarthy Road

The City of Ottawa is concerned about an exposed cliffside on McCarthy Road and is seeking contractors to remove the risk of falling rocks.

The city conducted a geological assessment of the area last October that resulted in suggestion for “remedial attention” before the spring thaw.

The peeling walls and old rusted pipes that cling to life on the deteriorating stone walls inside of a dark and dampened Gatineau buildings conjures images of a scene straight from an old horror flick.

Any minutes now, the origin of all the echoed clinks and clanks that creep into the abandoned agoraphobic-inducing rooms will reveal itself to be the tapping of a hand made of knives belonging to a man in a striped green and red sweater.

Four parks added to goose control project

The city is to extend Canada goose population control measures to four parks along the Rideau River.

Rideau-Vanier Coun. Mathieu Fleury requested a biologist’s review of Riverain, Bordeleau, Kingsview and King Edward parks. The review found that all the parks were populated with geese and contained goose droppings.

La Société de transports de l'Outaouais (STO) aimerait avoir accès à d'autres voies réservées sur le territoire gatinois.

Une étude réalisée en novembre 2014, par la firme MMM, avait déjà suggéré au transporteur public d'aménager une nouvelle voie réservée sur le boulevard Maisonneuve.

Une autre étude, qui est financée entièrement par le ministère des Transports, a été lancée récemment.

Massive CFB Rockcliffe redevelopment plan includes 5,300 homes

The old Canadian Forces Base Rockcliffe, one of Ottawa’s last massive inner city redevelopment sites, is set to turn into a community of 5,300 homes.

The long-awaited community design plan for the base will go before the city’s planning committee on Tuesday.

At 131 hectares, the parcel of land neighbours the Aviation Parkway, the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway, the National Research Council and Montreal Road. Also included in the design are three elementary schools, parks, a town square and office space. Both the planning committee and city council must vote for the proposed zoning before any shovels break ground.

There is a report you can find on the City of Ottawa website that belongs in the fiction section of the public library.

It is called Transforming Our Nation’s Capital: Ottawa Light Rail and I have been thinking about this report ever since ridership numbers came out earlier this week for OC Transpo.The numbers were not good, by the way. It seems people in Ottawa are losing interest in transit. At a most inopportune time for the city.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson said the city has sped up the taxi bylaw review and expects a full report to be available by the end of December.

Outside consultant KPMG is expected to review fare structures, and could recommend ways to regulate, rather than ban, Uber, which currently disregards Ottawa's licensing and insurance regulations.
