Somerset Coun. Catherine McKenney hopes to eliminate cycling deaths by changing how the city reviews fatal collisions.
At a transportation committee meeting Wednesday, the downtown councillor asked staff to explain the current review process, with the hope of following other municipalities who have a zero-death goal.
It’s achievable, in theory; a 2012 coroner’s report concluded all 129 cycling deaths between 2006 and 2010 were preventable.

City staff have recommended the hold placed on the Carp dump be lifted after the West Carleton Environmental Centre site plan application was approved last week.
The site’s holding provision was put into place until the site plan was approved. Now that staff have given the go-ahead, the information will be presented at the city’s Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee (ARAC) on Nov. 5, and will go to council on Nov. 12 where staff will recommend council pass a bylaw to lift the hold.

A group of about 40 environmental activists who staged a sit-in outside the main gates at Rideau Hall went home optimistic Thursday after one of the prime minister’s assistants came out to speak with them.
The group had been protesting to demand that Justin Trudeau freeze the expansion of Canada’s oilsands and head to the United Nations Conference on Climate Change on Nov. 30 with specific emissions reduction targets.

Newly-minted Environment Minister Catherine McKenna will soon leave for Paris to prepare for a critical United Nations meeting on climate change.
Two weeks removed from capturing Ottawa Centre in a major election-night upset, McKenna, 44, continued her meteoric political career Wednesday when she was named to the inaugural Liberal cabinet of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Donald Morse can already picture the Riverside South of the future, and it has its own downtown, complete with boutique shops, local restaurants and a parkette town square.
“This is really interesting because it's going to be surrounded by two-storey buildings (with) shops,” said Morse, an urban planner with the city's planning and growth management department.
“They're not going to be the national chains. They're talking about Ontario-wide or local restaurants and boutiques and places like that.”

A demonstration for climate change action planned for this weekend is now changing its target location from 24 Sussex to the Prime Minister’s temporary residence on the grounds of Rideau Hall.
“The truth is that, whether he is living in it or not, 24 Sussex remains the official residence of the Prime Minister,” reads a post updated Nov. 3 on www.climatewelcome.ca, the website created for the event.

A plan to spend $1.7 million on new segregated bike lanes along Confederation Boulevard near the U.S. Embassy was unanimously approved Wednesday by the city’s transportation committee.
The project will see concrete barriers on the east side of Mackenzie Avenue — installed along the roadway after the 9/11 attack — replaced with bollards, behind which segregated, bi-directional bike lanes will be built between Rideau and Murray streets.

Ottawa’s roads have skidded out of control.That’s according to the Ontario Municipal Benchmarking Initiative, which found the capital is worst among 15 Canadian municipalities for the quality of its roads.
Only 19 per cent of Ottawa’s roads are in good or very good condition.
That’s a three-per cent improvement from 2013, but it’s still 12 points off second-worst Thunder Bay, Ont., and miles behind Calgary, where 81 per cent of its roads are good or very good.

Cyclists without lights on their bicycles were stopped by an Ottawa Police officer at the Corktown Bridge on Tuesday afternoon, as part of a cycling safety event.
Const. Paul Cahill worked alongside members of Citizens for Safe Cycling and Safer Roads Ottawa, handing out free reflectors and lights to people peddling along the Rideau Canal."The goal here is to make sure that those people who are chosing to cycle are safe doing so, " said Felicity Borgal, the director of Citizens for Safe Cycling.
