Reevely: Covering LeBreton Flats rail line wouldn’t cost much, Senators group says
Ottawa Citizen

By David Reevely, Ottawa Citizen, February 2, 2016

Covering about a kilometre of light-rail line through LeBreton Flats is a crucial part of the Ottawa Senators’ proposal for the property and can be done for only about $25 million, says one of the group’s top planners.

“Everybody’s very comfortable with it. Certainly final detailing and actual construction would require us to be very careful so that we don’t interrupt the LRT schedule,” says Graham Bird, who has overseen the construction of the Ottawa Convention Centre, Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre and Lansdowne Park, among other major projects.

Ontario’s wind energy plan ignored impact on rural communities, U of O study says
Ottawa Citizen

By Tom Spears, Ottawa Citizen, February 3, 2016

Ontario brought in wind energy with a “top-down” style that brushed off the worries of communities where the massive turbines now stand, says a University of Ottawa study.

The 2009 Green Energy Act gave little thought to the transformation that wind farms bring to rural communities — problems that even revisions to the act “will only partially address,” writes a group headed by Stewart Fast.

Ottawa Citizen

By Karen Turner, Ottawa Citizen, January 21, 2016

Mailyne Briggs has never trekked to the top of Mt. Everest, but her “journey” to live a zero waste lifestyle for a year has definitely been an uphill challenge, filled with similar feelings of fear, frustration and elation.

“It’s like climbing a mountain. It’s exhausting and overwhelming, but then it gets easier after that,” says the 30-year-old single mom, who last February decided to dramatically change the way she shops, eats and lives to eliminate her household garbage and promote a greener, leaner lifestyle.

Ottawa Citizen

By David Reevely, Ottawa Citizen, January 22, 2016

Premier Kathleen Wynne wants a pipeline for Alberta oil across Ontario, it’s now clearer than ever. She said it when Ontario was fading behind Western Canada’s powerhouse — but now she’s said it again with Alberta Premier Rachel Notley in Toronto as a supplicant rather than a patron.

“We should see this as an opportunity and an obligation, rather than tearing the country apart, to solve a very important issue,” Wynne said, Notley at her side, after a morning meeting. “We’ve got economic imperatives, we’ve got environmental imperatives. Those are shared.”
