Modbox to show off latest landmark Vanier building plans

The latest details for the St. Charles Church development will be up for discussion.

Residents will have a chance to check out the updated plans for the former Catholic church at an information session on May 30.

The evening is hosted by Rideau-Vanier Coun. Mathieu Fleury at the church starting at 7 p.m.Fleury said he will moderate the evening and residents can expect a presentation of the most recent architectural plans from the church’s owners, Modbox Developments.

Organized by Ecology Ottawa, the event, now in its ninth year, will feature music by local DJs, a vegetarian barbecue and bake sale, face painting for children and massages from registered massage therapists on May 28 in the Rogers Plus and Kunstadt Sports parking lots at 680 and 690 Bank St.

Helping organizing the event, Danyka Leclair said there will be a mountain of interesting finds to search through.

“There is no price on any items except the more valuable, bigger items so there are lots of good bargains to be had,” Leclair said.

Under the hot sun Jenny Throop and Ryan Christie inspect their crops, pulling out weeds from between the rows of produce on their small plot of land.

Although there is nothing to harvest just yet there are signs of progress.

"We love growing food so it just came naturally to us," said Throop as she admires her growing pea sprouts.

On the east end of Gatineau, along the shore of the Ottawa River, sits a beautiful wetland and marsh called McLaurin Bay.

But it can be tricky to tour because you can't have a propeller in the water in much of the bay and it can difficult to paddle through the grass.

That's why Marco Alain launched Bayou-Outaouais — a tour company that takes visitors through on an airboat, which has a very low hull and is pushed by an airplane-like propeller on the back end.

One city councillor says complaints about overnight light rail construction noise have subsided in his ward.

Rideau-Vanier Councillor Mathieu Fleury says there hasn't been an ordered change to cause that decrease, but says work may become quieter as it progresses.

"Perhaps the loudest and busiest evenings are passed," he said. "And now we can work on some very minor work that would be needed to the jersey barrier connecting the Nicholas off-ramp."

Surprises are good for birthdays. For spending $1 million of public money to alter public land on a deal negotiated and approved in secret, not so much.

Last week's announcement that they city will hand over $1 million to a private company to build a 50,000 square-foot playground on a beloved waterfront without informing councillors, without consulting the community, with no public details available about the deal — and not even a single pretty picture to woo us — is another display of a lack of transparency at the halls of municipal power.

But 16 trees at Mooney’s Bay park have already been chopped down and kids from across the country are being recruited to consult on the playground design.

Dalhousie community hears about Albert Street LRT snag

It was only four minutes, but it was plenty of time for members of the Dalhousie Community Association to learn about just what’s happening with the city’s light rail project at its annual general meeting.

In a speed-dating style line of presentations, complete with a bell at the five-minute mark, Damon Berlin, city stakeholder relations officer for the project, told the community association about a snag with the project on Albert Street.

After asked a question about delays, Berlin explained that when pipes are decommissioned they are filled with grout. The problem on Albert Street is it happened to the wrong pipe.

About 75 people were hanging on to the Sue Holloway Fitness Park at Mooney's Bay Wednesday evening to protest a large playground that is set to take its place, and were tossing around their own ideas for a different location.

Once finished the playground will cover an area more than half the size of a Canadian football field and change the look of the north end of the park, which people at the rally say is good as it is.
