A city project to reduce the number of mosquitoes in the West End appears to have been successful according to one city councillor.
Kanata North residents voted in favour of paying for the mosquito control problem earlier this year, after reporting being unable to take their children outside because of the blood suckers. Spraying began in April.

The city of Ottawa's beach season is officially underway as of today.
Beaches in the city are open and will have a lifeguard on duty from noon to 7.
The schedule of course will run all summer long, ending on August 28th.

The final stretch of Transitway set to be converted to LRT will close June 24.
The section between Merton Street and Tunney’s Pasture station will close at 7 p.m. A new platform on the station’s upper level will reopen the following Monday.
To facilitate the weekend switch-over, the section of Transitway between Westboro and Tunney’s Pasture stations will also be temporarily closed. All buses will travel along Scott Street.

Ontario's environment minister is dreaming of a day when all new homes generate as much energy as they use, but the people who build such homes say meeting his target date of 2030 won't be easy.
Glen Murray announced the goal for "net zero carbon" homes in the new provincial climate change strategy in early June. He's promising changes to the building code to come into effect by 2030 at the latest, as well as consultations on how best to achieve the targets.

A resident who lives on Lorrain Boulevard in Gatineau, Que., is calling for lower speed limits on the road after a teen cyclist was critically injured in a crash Tuesday and later died in hospital.
Elizabeth Graham-Welton, 13, was heading west on Blanchette Road at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday when she approached the intersection to cross the boulevard.

City crews have had to reinstall flexible posts along the south side of Laurier Avenue East twice in the past 10 days because someone keeps removing them.
The posts, which are white with blue stripes and stand about a metre high, were installed two weeks ago to keep vehicles that are turning right onto Nicholas Street from lining up in the east-west bike lane and forcing cyclists to weave into traffic to get around cars.

The City of Ottawa is holding a long-awaited information meeting later this month to share the results of a study on the Goulbourn Wetland Complex. The complex is a series of wetlands in a large area south and west of Stittsville that’s been identified as “Provincially Significant Wetland” (PSW).
Around 2004, a development proposal on Flewellyn Road triggered a review of all land in the area by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. That review resulted in the identification of “new” PSW on about 60 properties. (We reported on this back in 2014 in an article titled “Property values drained by wetland designation”.)

An abandoned restaurant on the east side of the Rideau Canal is set to re-open this weekend.The waterfront bistro near the University of Ottawa sat empty for all of last summer, but new owners are hoping to resurrect the patio.
When the restaurant formerly known as 8 Locks Flat opened as part of an National Capital Commission (NCC) pilot project, the goal was to bring more attractions and more visitors to the shoreline. Failed lease negotiations in 2014 mean the restaurant has been sitting vacant since.

Lyme disease is on the rise in the Ottawa are; a worrisome trend as more of us head outdoors in this beautiful weather. Health professionals are warning residents to make sure to check themselves and their dogs after any walk in the woods.The deer tick is a tiny bug but it can make a lasting impression if it's carrying the bacteria that cause Lyme disease.
Ticks are out earlier this year because of the warm start to spring, and in greater numbers. So vigilance is key.
Ben Facchin has owned dogs all his life. In all that time, he's only had one tick on one dog until now.

It was clear that Ottawa had a problem when it emerged the city has been unable to ticket out-of-province red-light runners. Now, we know the scope of that problem: Nearly 5,000 people should have received tickets in 2015 but got off scot-free.
And, the revenue the city has missed out on totals more than $1.5 million. If you run a red light, you should have to pay the ticket. It’s as simple as that. But the city hasn’t yet figured out how to get non-Ontario drivers to cough up their cash.

Having worked on the Central Experimental Farm for 25 years, I could not help but add my views to the debate about building a new Civic Campus for the Ottawa Hospital on some of the farmland. The argument that the hospital should not be built on the experimental farm because agricultural research is at risk is spurious. The hospital project is critical for the city, Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec.
It is important to review the past. Both successive Liberal and Conservative governments have essentially abandoned agricultural research in Ottawa.
