By Ashley Burke, CBC News Ottawa, August 16, 2016

"He kept saying I was Palestinian and Palestinians do bad things in Ottawa," she wrote.

Ottawa will legalize Uber despite looming taxi lawsuit
Ottawa Citizen

By Jon Willing, Ottawa Citizen, August 15, 2016

The city won’t delay making Uber legal, even though taxi plate owners are making a potentially precedent-setting claim that they’re owed millions because of a major change in municipal licensing.

“We’re proceeding full-steam ahead,” Mayor Jim Watson said Monday.

“We think the public certainly want choice when it comes to transportation in the City of Ottawa. The taxi industry has really had a monopoly for decades. I’m very comfortable with where we are legally and procedurally to move forward with alternative forms of transportation, like Uber and other ride-sharing companies, on a go-forward basis.”

The City of Gatineau is installing devices so it can finally measure the volume of its sewer overflows into the Ottawa River.

The move comes years after its Ontario neighbour, the City of Ottawa, launched its 17-project Ottawa River action plan worth hundreds of millions of dollars to clean up the same waterway.

(...)

The Ottawa Riverkeeper, Meredith Brown, finds those figures astounding.

"That's huge," said Brown of the 1,300 overflows. Ottawa counted 80 overflow events in the same year.

One girl wanted to know about the importance of conserving our scarce water resources. A boy asked me what the government is doing to protect endangered beavers.

Earlier today the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority issued a severe drought warning for several sub watersheds of the Mississippi River. This includes the Fall River, Clyde River, Indian River and Carp River watersheds.

The City of Ottawa’s central drinking water system relies upon the Ottawa River. The City’s annual water demand is normally less than 1% of the Ottawa River flow. The current River levels are comparable to the same period last year. The City’s communal well systems draw on deep aquifers and are currently not impacted by the drought conditions. Water use in the communal well systems is well within the City’s permitted water use.
