Ottawa wildlife centre facing 'overwhelming' number of injured birds - Ottawa - CBC News

By CBC News Ottawa, September 14, 2016

An Ottawa wildlife centre says it's in desperate need of funds after seeing a steep increase in the number of sick, injured and orphaned birds arriving at its doors.

The Wild Bird Care Centre says the number of birds it's cared for this year has risen by about 35 per cent over 2015 — and as a result, they're launching an online fundraiser in the hopes of bringing in $100,000 to pay the bills associated with that care.

Suck it up, Ontario. We need more green energy.
Ottawa Citizen

By Madeline Ashby, Ottawa Citizen, September 13, 2016

Have you heard the bad news?

According to NASA, this August was the hottest month on record. Again. That’s not the hottest August on record, or the hottest month of 2016. It means that August of 2016 was the hottest month since recording began – in 1880. That means 2016 is well underway to becoming the hottest year on record, just like the past three years. In fact, every month since October 2015 has set new monthly high-temperature records. This summer was hotter than last summer. This winter was warmer than last winter. And it doesn’t show signs of stopping.

Reevely: Americans keep going on Great Lakes wind power while Ontario stalls
Ottawa Citizen

By David Reevely, Ottawa Citizen, September 14, 2016

The Obama administration has released a new offshore wind power strategy that includes building a load of wind farms in the Great Lakes while Ontario sits on its hands. We’re worried (officially) about stirring up sediments and contaminating our own and U.S. drinking water. They evidently aren’t so concerned.

“Offshore” wind power was one of the elements in Dalton McGuinty’s green-energy revolution. There’s room for big turbines, steady and predictable wind, relatively few neighbours compared with land-based wind farms, and the potential to put them so far out nobody will see them from land at all.

Ottawa Citizen

By Jon Willing, Ottawa Citizen, September 14, 2016

Council voted 21-2 Wednesday to move forward with a tunnel environmental assessment, subject to funding help from the upper-tier governments.

Gloucester-South Nepean Coun. Michael Qaqish dismissed the tunnel as a project of “political convenience” with a massive price tag, even before knowing the ground conditions.

Metro News

By Emma Jackson, Ottawa Metro News, September 12, 2016

We’re complaining as much as ever, just about different things.

The bylaw department’s 2015 annual report shows spikes in calls about licensing, signs and zoning, while animal and noise complaints have dropped steeply over the past fives years.

Bylaw chief Roger Chapman said the reduced noise is thanks to being proactive in student-dense neighbourhoods.

NCC process makes it virtually impossible to put new Civic on Experimental Farm field number 1 - Ottawa - CBC News

By Joanne Chianello, CBC News Ottawa, September 13, 2016

The National Capital Commission was given an unenviable task by boss Melanie Joly. Take over the controversial discussions on finding a new location for an expanded Civic campus of The Ottawa Hospital, consider all federal land available and report back in six months, the minister of Canadian Heritage said in May.

Oh, and don't forget to check in with the public. Talk to you in November.

Editorial: NCC’s criteria for a new Civic campus make perfect sense
Ottawa Citizen

By the Editor, Ottawa Citizen, September 12, 2016

It’s too early to predict which of a dozen potential sites will eventually house the new Civic campus of the Ottawa Hospital, but the process now underway to select it should cheer anyone interested in local health care. In addition to the list of proposed locations, the National Capital Commission, charged with the unenviable task of wading through the hyper-charged politics of the situation, has laid out clear criteria to guide the recommendation it must eventually make.
