Canada is best in the world in figuring out how wind behaves using model helicop

By Tom Spears, Ottawa Sun, November 7, 2016

Here's a Canadian specialty you never knew about: We lead the world in the ability to mount a model helicopter on a model ship, spin the rotor really, really fast, and do accurate measurements of how the wind behaves.

At the National Research Council wind tunnel near the airport, the scale model helicopter and ship are showing test pilots what to expect when the Royal Canadian Navy gets a new ship next year.

The Interim Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment ship, a converted container vessel to be delivered in late 2017, will have hangars for two Cyclone helicopters, and a flight deck near the ship's stern.

Lawes: Let’s give urban wildlife a voice in Ottawa
Ottawa Citizen

By Debbie Lawes, Anouk Hoedeman and Donna Dubreuil, Ottawa Citizen, November 7, 2016

One of Ottawa’s greatest natural treasures is its abundance of wildlife. You don’t have to go far in urban or suburban Ottawa to see hundreds of species of local, migratory and even Species at Risk birds, in addition to deer, raccoons, beaver, foxes, porcupines, turtles, frogs … the list goes on.

Several studies have found that human health is intrinsically linked with biodiversity and ecosystem health. So we have a vested interest in maintaining wildlife populations of all species, and protecting enough habitats to sustain them.

Mayor Jim Watson wants to know where the four candidates running in the upcoming byelection in Ottawa-Vanier stand on a range of issues of interest to the city.

Watson’s office said on Sunday that he had emailed the four main candidates in the Nov. 17 byelection — Liberal Nathalie Des Rosiers, Progressive Conservative André Marin, New Democrat Claude Bisson and the Green Party’s Raphaël Morin — four questions, requesting a Yes or No reply by Thursday. He also left room on the form for comments.

Watson said he wants to know the candidates’ positions on the second phase of the light rail transit project, a proposed truck tunnel, funding for the Ottawa police direct action response team and guns and gangs unit and additional funding for social housing.

What you want from city's budget
Sherring
Columnists
Opinion
Ottawa Sun

By Susan Sherring, Ottawa Sun, November 4, 2016

When it comes to balancing taxes and providing services, what exactly do Ottawans want? Leading up to the release of the city’s draft budget Wednesday, the Sun talked to taxpayers across the city and asked them about their thoughts on city services and rising taxes.

And while there are some similarities to be found, there appears — through our entirely unscientific survey — to be a huge schism as to what residents think, often depending on where they live.

Ottawa Citizen

By Patrick Langston, Ottawa Citizen, November 4, 2016

RND Construction’s Roy Nandram may have exited the recent Housing Design Awards in Ottawa staggering under the weight of trophies, but those wins don’t mean he’s heading down the corporate expansion path.

The highly regarded green builder and renovator not only walked off with the most awards (a jaw-dropping nine) but scored a first for the annual event, which is hosted by the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association, by winning two of the prestige trophies: custom builder of the year and renovator of the year.

Councillors raise concerns about O'Connor bikeway

By Kristy Cameron, CFRA News, November 3, 2016

A handful of city councillors are raising concerns about the O'Connor Street bike lanes, after two crashes on the bikeway since it opened last week.

The city has put up electronic billboards warning drivers to watch for cyclists before turning left across the bike lanes but some councillors are questioning the safety of a two-way bike lane on a one-way street.

"Some automatically assume that a bike lane is safer than no bike lane. Clearly at this point it isn't," says Coun. Rick Chiarelli.
