By Tom Spears, Ottawa Citizen, January 19, 2017

Small aircraft at the Gatineau Airport have hit one wild turkey and come within a drumstick on three other occasions in less than two weeks.

There’s been no damage to turkeys (as far as anyone can tell) or people. A veteran Ottawa pilot says turkeys on runways are fairly routine, and pilots who keep their eyes open shouldn’t get into trouble.

Ottawa Citizen

By Matthew Pearson, Ottawa Citizen, January 19, 2017

On the same day Mayor Jim Watson tweeted a photo showing both ends of Ottawa’s Confederation LRT tunnel meeting somewhere under Rideau Street, the National Capital Commission signed off on the city’s proposed alignment and functional design for the future western LRT extension along the Sir John A. Macdonald corridor.

Digging of the 2.5-kilometre LRT tunnel beneath downtown began at both ends and met somewhere in the middle, east of the Rideau Canal. There’s a western portal near the future Pimisi station, a central portal below Queen Street and an eastern portal at the University of Ottawa.

Watson’s tweet shows a muddy tunnel where workers first joined the two sides.

By Jessica Cunha, Ottawa Community News, January 18, 2017

The construction of a multi-use pathway along Campeau Drive should begin this summer.

The sidewalk on the north side of Campeau between Teron Road and Knudson Drive will be widened to three metres from the standard 1.5 metres to allow for both pedestrians and cyclists.

“Over the last few years we’ve had trouble with kids riding their bicycles on the sidewalks on Campeau,” said Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson at her town hall meeting on Jan. 16. “It’s a busy road and parents don’t want their kids on the road.”

Some environmental groups applauded the announcement as another step in the right direction, while others called for an all-out ban on bottling and selling groundwater for profit, but the industry noted that water bottlers are responsible for a small fraction of water-taking permits.

It’s not just your imagination, crows are taking over Ottawa
Ottawa Citizen

By Tom Spears, Ottawa Citizen, January 18, 2017

This winter, the Citizen’s Tom Spears looks at what makes our coldest season tick. It’s a series we call The Science of Winter, and today we hear from a birder about why you’re likely to see so many crows together in January.

It’s not your imagination telling you that a murder of crows in central Ottawa had thousands of the birds all together. Ottawa gets that in winter.

There’s nothing subtle about crows. They’re big and loud and yakking all the time, waking up Citizen editors in Centretown long before sunrise, which is partly why you’re reading this. And crows are social, so they flock together, especially in winter. Big group, big noise.
