Potholes don’t just threaten cars

Re: Just how damaging are potholes and how pricey can the repair be? Feb. 28

Who is suffering from the pothole problem? Only motorists, apparently.Although freeze-thaw weather breaks up the asphalt surface, it takes the weight and speed of motor vehicles to finish the job.

Councillor questions $10M earmarked for Stage 2 public art

The city would spend $10 million on new public art along the Stage 2 rail extensions, prompting one councillor to suggest lowering the spending cap for artwork.

Council’s default position is to spend the money on art, since the city has a policy that says one per cent of capital projects over $2 million must be spent on public art.

Wet weather on the way through Wednesday before mercury plunges

There’s no proverb about March showers but Environment Canada is warning of rain that may brim creeks and turn puddles into ponds.

The agency issued a special weather statement Tuesday morning warning that while “rainfall amounts are not expected to be overly significant” the ground is already sodden with recent rain and snowmelt and is less able to absorb more.

Up until a few weeks ago, I’d never seen one. Then one day while driving down Huntmar, I saw a pair of small coyotes hanging out in the field north of the Arcadia subdivision.

Uber and taxis could get some competition with new local app

A tech-savvy city worker could be Uber's next competitor in Ottawa's licensed ride-ordering market.

Neville Hewage created the oRide app as the city started looking into changing the licensing system that regulates the taxi industry. After a few years working on the technology, he submitted his application in December to the city for a private transportation company licence.

Boulevard Maisonneuve in Gatineau reopens after sinkhole - Ottawa - CBC News

Things have returned to normal on Boulevard Maisonneuve in downtown Gatineau after a sinkhole closed a northbound stretch of the road this weekend.

Gatineau police said the sinkhole developed Saturday afternoon. Boulevard Maisonneuve was closed to northbound trafffic between Rue Verdun and Boulevard Sacré-Coeur as crews worked to fix the hole, but it reopened just before 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

More than 50 residents filed into an open house at St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church on Feb. 22 to discuss trucking routes and noise concerns regarding the upcoming Combined Sewer Storage Tunnel.

Montreal Road reconstruction proposed plans unveiled

Plans for Montreal Road are shaping up and the community will soon get to have their say about it.

Montreal road between North River Road and St. Laurent Boulevard will be completely redone starting in 2018.

The city will hold an open house on the proposed changes on March 9 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health, 299 Montreal Rd.

(...)Proposals include a separate cycling path 1.5 metres wide on the north side of Montreal Road, an on-road painted line cycling path on the south side, and a change from four lanes, with parking to a hybrid of three lanes from North River to the Vanier Parkway. Also proposed is a flexible four-lane road from the parkway to St. Laurent, with a priority lane for transit-only, and parking during off-peak times.

Ottawa Airport now fully on-side with LRT Phase Two

The president and C.E.O. of the Ottawa Airport Authority says it's now or never for a rail link to the Ottawa Airport.

In the past, the airport has been reluctant to participate in phase two of light rail, mainly due to the $155-million dollar cost of a spur line.However, the provincial government has committed to paying half the line's cost, and city officials are hoping the federal government will pay the rest.

LRT tunnel excavation fully complete: mayor

A major milestone has been reached for Stage 1 of Ottawa's LRT.

Mayor Jim Watson tweeted Friday afternoon that the tunnel excavation is now 100 per cent complete.

The first stage of LRT is set to be complete next year.
