Type compostable coffee pods into the City of Ottawa’s online waste explorer and you’ll be told to toss them in the trash.
The city still wants people to avoid placing the coffee pods into their green bins with kitchen slop and other organic material, which has been frustrating for at least one Ontario manufacturer of the single-use pods.
The province, however, is showing a greater interest in getting pods out of dumps and into organic processing facilities, like the one contracted by the City of Ottawa to compost green-bin waste.
The Progressive Conservative provincial government is proposing changes to the food and organic waste policy statement that would say municipalities should allow compostable coffee pods in their green-bin programs. A public consultation lasts until Nov. 14.
