Ottawa, the wet and inclement city, takes toll on LRT trains

By Tom Spears, Ottawa Citizen, January 29, 2020

If you want to run trains in Ottawa, they need to be waterproof.

The issue came up late Monday when OC Transpo’s general manager, John Manconi, sent an email to city councillors about the recent power failures on some trains on the Confederation Line.

“The vehicles appear to be more prone to these failures during wet or inclement weather,” he wrote.

Which raises the question: How wet and inclement are we, anyway?

Short answer: Pretty wet.

We asked David Phillips to run some Ottawa numbers for us. He’s the senior climatologist for Environment and Climate Change Canada.
