Official test results aren’t in yet, but the unusual green colour of the Rideau Canal is probably a bloom of blue-green algae according to an expert.
Blame the long, warm and dry summer weather, says Jesse Vermaire, who studies water plants (including algae) in Carleton University’s biology department.
“I haven’t carried out any sampling on the Canal this year but have been told it is likely a cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) bloom,” he said in an email.
