We should build a traffic tunnel under Lowertown and Sandy Hill, but not for the reasons we’ve always thought.
For starters, it wouldn’t be a truck tunnel. It would be a car tunnel also used by trucks, as the feasibility study on the idea (released a couple of weeks ago and being formally presented to city council’s transportation committee Wednesday) says clearly. Transportation planners from consulting firm Parsons figure 25,000 vehicles a day would use an underground connection between the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge and the Highway 417-Coventry Road interchange — but only 1,700 of those would be trucks.
