For decades, the islands in the Ottawa River surrounding Chaudière Falls have been all but invisible to area residents. Ground zero for Ottawa’s lumber trade, Chaudière and Albert islands, and nearby shorelines were fenced-off industrial zones throughout much of the past 100 years, and the falls, once a leading tourist attraction, were dammed and hidden from public view. But the lands have remained front-of-mind for members of surrounding Algonquin communities, who view the area as key to their cultural heritage and the falls themselves as sacred. via A user’s guide to the the islands, the falls, Zibi and the Windmill development | Ottawa Citizen.
